it is ok to install vinyl plank flooring next to hardwood, or should you just run with the hardwood through to the next room? I have existing oak hardwood in my dining room and kitchen. I have a family room that has entrances into both the dining room and the kitchen. I'm planning on replacing the carpet and was wondering if it's ok to do so with vinyl plank flooring (darker than the existing oak) or if I should go with an engineered hardwood the same color (or close) to the existing oak floor
I would first ask, do you intend on going all the way through the house with the vinyl? The only reason to go with vinyl would be if it's a high traffic area, pets, kids, etc. Personally I would want the same flooring all the way through. The price for that hardwood would be comparable to a decent vinyl plank.
Hello we can come and give you free estimate i can go with a hardwood im not recommended vinyl if its not Basemant
It is 100% acceptable to install vinyl plank next to hardwood. There are a few things you may want to consider before you make your decision. First are you planning on selling in the near future, if you are it I would highly recommend matching to the existing hardwood, as this will increase selling value. Secondly installing vinyl plank will cause a hight difference between rooms. Finally there will be a noticeable difference in texture and appearance.
Its up to you however you want to do i can do hardwood and vinyl too but still my opinion is a to go trough with a hardwood

You can install vinyl plank flooring up to Hardwood. Thing to remember is the thickness of the vinyl plank compared to the existing Hardwood. More than likely you will need to install plywood under the vinyl plank to get it up to the correct height of the hardwood which will cost an additional money. If it was my house I would try to match the existing hardwood throughout the house.
It's a matter of personal preference that's all and a different application for installation. If you asked an interior designer more than likely they would tell you to keep the hardwood throughout but again you can install any type of flooring it does not matter important thing is to keep in mind to keep it the exact same height.

Thanks to all for the advice - I was leaning towards all hardwood and you all just confirmed it for me!
Thanks again!
When possible, the more consistancy throughout, the better.
The right vinyl would look fine as well as long is it covers a lot of sf.
