We are building a wall to enclose the area under a second story deck, there is a beam supporting the deck about 12' from the house, which is where the wall will be. We want to includ a window in the wall and the question is ... do we also have to have a header over the window or is the beam (three 2x8's) good enough.

There's insufficient information to answer your question; would need to have a complete picture of the balcony structure and contemplated details of the wall, window and structure (i.e. foundation) beneath the deck. If the window happened to be the full distance between columns there is a potential problem as the beam sags over time.

The Code is a little weak on the subject of decks.

Of course you would require development and building permits to start.

Hi there...

As far as I am concerned.......the beam is good enough.
