We had a leak in my basement and water made its was under the laminate flooring. When I walk on the floor there's a squishy sound from the water caught between the basement concrete floor and the laminate floor. Also, water ever so slightly seeps through the joints when waked on it. What can I do? Is this floor toast and have to be replaced or can I run a dehumidifier to dry out the water?
Hi Alex.
Unfortunately you have to replace the entire floor.
If you are going to try to dehumidify or dry flooring area
You will get more damage you to the structure of the laminate.
Thank you
Edward
Hi,
Get some fans running plus your dehumidifier for a day see how much it helped with damage..if not then your next step is remove and install new floors.

Based on your description, highly recommend removing the floor as soon as possible before creating mold then will be a bigger process, clean and dry the concrete appropriately then install a new laminate and new under pad.
The floor needs to be replaced. Mold will grow under it between the underpad and the subfloor. This is why the industry is moving away from laminate flooring in basements and going towards luxury vinyl plank. If it was LVP, the floor could be pulled up, washed off (especially if it was a sewer leak), the basement dried out and then the same LVP could be relayed again.
Hi Alex,
Im afraid the laminate is probably toast.pull it all up.
Then, I install this product on every basement floor when we are building and renovating. Dri-Core sub floor 2' 2' panels. The ones with the channeled plastic on the underside. Then if another leak is ever experianced, the water flows undet the subfloor. And air below will dry out the water.
Then install foam underlay. And your new flooring.
If it was vynil flooring you had down it can be re-used.
Just wash it well with an anti fungus or mold ckeaner mixed with water.
Hope it all goes well for you.
Regards,
James
Good morning, you have to replace the flooring.
Unfortunately the only way to get rid of the water between the laminate and the concrete .
If the laminate that is installed is it a waterproof product there is a small chance that you could reinstall it however it would be best to plan for replacement a dehumidifier would only remove excess humidity in the air If the water is left between the laminate and the concrete or more than a week you will also need to consider mould and mildew.
It would be best To remove the flooring as soon as possible clean up any excess water and run your dehumidifier for at least a week to pull as much moisture out of the concrete as possible
You have to remove wet floor asap because laminate is perfect source of mold. After 3-4 days mold starts growing. If you have mold , better be removed by professional or contact your insurance.
