Regular Asphalt shingles will work just fine, or you can go with a laminated asphalt shingle such as the ones Owens Corning offers. There are other options such as DaVinci or Eurolite. These both have a 50 year transferable warranty and are virtually indestructible. The only downside to these options is that they are about 2x the amount of asphalt shingles. They are pretty much guaranteed to last "forever" so a large investment now will last a very long time. That being said, regular asphalt shingles will last at least 10 years if installed well. I wouldn't worry too much about it, as long as you choose an exceptional installer, your roof will be in good hands!
Good luck!
Ruth,
Most brand name shingles will work well for you. am assuming the your place is a standard 4/12 pitch, in which case you have a lot to choose from.If you are hiring a roofing company, they would know the current codes and what to use as an underlay. Yhis should include drip edge and and "ice guard" product. Most shingles have a 25 year (plus) quality guaranty and this will suffice for Manitoba. Price and quality can go together but also consider the appearance that you want on the roof as there are several different looks and products available.
