What would you recommend for a maintenance free exterior siding? It seems they all have terrible reviews!
Hardy Board. More expensive but nicer.
I have found that mitten vinyl siding is a good vinyl siding, but if you want something a little tougher, hardy board is the way to go.
And I don't think any siding is completely maintenance free. They will all need to be cleaned sometime.

Sorry to disagree, but last I read, you need to paint the Hardy board every five years to maintain the warranty. Hardly maintenance free. Also, the warranty specifically excludes and installs in the Maritimes. Not confidence inspiring.
I recommend you look at aluminum for the best long term investment.
Be brave when picking your colors, the world already has enough white siding...

Hi Iris,
Vinyl siding is still the best maintenance free product on the market. If you are reading bad reviews it it because of improper installation. We live in a country that the temperature fluctuates 100 degrees so proper installation is very important.
I started to install vinyl siding in 1975 and the houses still look good today, but nothing is maintenance free it still has to be cleaned the odd time.
My favorite products are ROYAL, MITTEN and VYTEC siding. Royal is my vinyl of choice, and if you stay to lighter colors it will not show the fading from the sun as everything will fade trust me...
P.S. I have never striped a vinyl house to install aluminum....But I have striped 100's of aluminum houses to install vinyl. I do stress that the installation is the most important part of any project I have seen the cheapest product made to look great, and the best product look like ... well real bad.
Hope this helps and good luck.
Eric
Eric is correct in that vinyl siding is still a good option but like everything else, it has to be installed properly. I am a big supporter of Hardie products.

To select a premium product in vinyl siding is quite challenging. From information available it appears that the thickness should be at least 0.046". We are looking at Royal and Gentek siding but other than the length (Royal has 16'-4" panels and Gentek 12') there is not much to go by.
All vinyl will fade over time and to get that covered by warranty will be a challenge as opinion about fading can be subjective.
As others already noted, "maintenance free"is somewhat misleading. Vinyl needs to be washed once in a while.
If anyone knows a site that actually compares various vinyl brands, please let me know.
I'm replacing 20 year-old Kaycan vinyl siding. Which is the best replacement choice -- Kaycan or Royal -- in terms of durability and longevity?
