I'm a tile setter, new to self employment. I did a job for a contractor, 24x24" marble. Now he is disputing the price. I charged him $12 psf. He is saying that he could have it done for $5 psf. I told him he is crazy. So what I want to know is what is the going rate for 24"x24" marble, just install? He is supplying all material.
Any info would help.
First of all installation rate is up to you. Second never start a job before discussing and agreeing upon the rate. Third ususally a final figure for the whole job before hand helps and fourth, have it in writting.
In my opinion its too late to discuss the rate. But $12 its about right at the high end.
My rate is $5.00 a square foot with scratch coat for porcelain. Now marble requires all cuts with a wet saw and is heavy and time consuming. 10-12 sqf is a fair price.
Most clients seem to be set on making trades work for rates which ceased having relevance decades ago, and claim competition as the reasoning.....
But, the standard rule is to establish all parameters, costs, responsibilities before any work is done.
have contract in place and signed so both parties are covered.
Natural stone can vary from $8 to $15 and that is only the labor.
Tradespeople need not subsidize others building projects, unless you feel particularly magnanimous.
too many trades seem willing to work for less, yet the cost of running a business never goes down.
I charge $7.50 for labor only on all large format polished porcelain or marble tiles. Any one installing these tile at $5 psf is an amateur or will lack quality work.
