Hi,
What I like to know is what kind of cement I should use.
Here is what I want to do. Coming up the stairs from the basement I have a 4" ledge. Before there was 4" oak installed matching the stairs. I removed it and installed a 1x4x96 inch piece of pine. Screwed it down and it is very solid. Now I want to put a 3/4x 4,5x96 Travertine to be level with the Floor. This will match the other side.
Now one person says I can use silicon. Another says use Mapei ultra mastic. Another says cement. My idea is that the mastic should be enough, there is no traffic or weight on it.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Matt
What ever you do, DO NOT USE SILICONE!
Mapei or mortar even PL Premium is an alternative.
Hope this helps.
Cheers
Thanks Mitchell.
I think I go with the Mapei. It's easy to put and work with.
Again, thanks.
Matt
Use the Mapei, it's designed to adhere tiles and is also easy to level them. The silicone you can't level them and the color of the silicone might bleed through natural tile. Cement is just not an adhesive period.
Thank you James
That is my choice, Mapei Ultramastic.
My Son could not believe those quick Answeres
Interresting James I did'n know that Cement is not an adhesive.
You Guys are awesome.

Hi Matt,
I hope I am in time.
Yes the Mapei is the route to go. But I strongly suggest you take some wire mesh and staple it down over the wood surface first. Then swipe a coat of the Mapei down.
Then apply the Mapei to the back of each tile and install and level as you go.
If you don't prep the floor first, the tiles will lift over time!
Hope this helps.

Hi James,
You are still in time.
I agree with you but as you see on the pictures its not tiles.
The piece of Travertine acts just as a Ledge 3,5x4,5x96. There is no Weight or Traffic.
As for the mesh I don't know if there is need for it, but good to know.
I thank you James, it's People like you guys that make the Difference.
