Hey.

I wonder what percentage of a total project ends up with design. I mean for a 100,000 dollar addition, what should an architect or designer cost?

Thanks

Hi, that's a great question. To put it simple on average expect to pay anywhere from 8-15% of the total job cost. So as per your example of a 100,000 addition you would be paying 8-15K.

Hope that helps you out.

The cost of design really depends on how complex the renovation is, is it more design or is it more structural engineering etc. Often you can get a design for a set cost if you wish to get the cost down figure your design out before you contact anyone the reason designers or architect tend to cost so much money is the numerous re-draws they need to do on every project.

Cost wise also depends on your area, generally for a regular addition or renovation. I generally budget between 6 and 10% of total cost on more complex designs 8-13%.

Good luck, hope that helps.

They usually go with the minimum of $1.50 a sf. of design. Unless you go to a large firm where the price defers immensely.
