I recently exposed the chimney in my 120 year old house. The chimney leads to the furnace in my basement & was framed in and plastered over. Upon removing the framing we uncovered a perfectly circular hole with just two bricks loosely placed inside. I wasn't sure if this was a bad thing so for the time being we taped over it to seal the hole, however I'd like to keep the chimney exposed so I'm hoping someone has some advice as to my next steps... attached a couple of pictures (1 before framing was removed & one after we sealed it) any advice is greatly appreciated !
Hi there,
The hole in your chimney is by design. The chimney was built around a circular piece of ducting which was used as a vent. If you want to keep the brick exposed, I would colour match it as best as possible, use the same mixture of mortar that was implemented when the chimney was built (lime-based cement, and even create faux mortar joints to mimic the current grout lines.
Thank you.
