So the original owner of my town home installed this trim all through the main level, and this is what the finished product looks like throughout. How would I repair this to be more aesthetically pleasing? I would rather do this as a weekend project than hire somebody.
Hi concerning your baseboards I would remove them all and install a nicer baseboard a little taller to hide any imperfections from old baseboards. If this is not an option installing latex caulking on the top Edge where it meets the wall would help and a couple coats of paint because that is one ugly color. Hope this is helpful Jeff
I agree with Jeff, replace the trim.
Ss for doing it yourself, if you're handy with a mitre saw, a finish nailer and a tape measure then you can more than likely do it yourself. However, keep in mind your time, it'll take you twice as long as a pro to do it, so if time is of concern hire someone, or conversely of you can't or don't want to use the tools required then hire a pro.
As for the type of trim, I've attached the cheapest (cost wise) trim Home Depot carries, it's the same stuff most builder's use in new home construction. It'll give you an idea on price point you're looking at for replacement (for materials).
Hope this helps.

It looks like it used to be hung higher and when the flooring was changed to something thinner, the original line was never fixed.
You would have to completely remove it, raise it up, and cover the gap at the bottom with a quarter round or shoe mold. You could also change it out completely to a taller baseboard.
The result that would look the best would be to remove the existing baseboard and replace it with a taller baseboard and caulk the top.
A cheaper but more time consuming option is painting the whole thing white, which is more of a diy option and may take multiple coats.
