When I have my property excavated to prepare for footings and foundation, how will I know if I need shoring or not? The excavation will be 6ft maximum from grade.

Check before digging the ground. If sandy yes, if not, 50/50.

Check with the excavation company or your concrete supplier, as they would know the terrain and advise accordingly.

All excavations in excess of 4ft deep would require shoring.

Shoring is required if the hole is deeper than 4ft or if you have room you can cut/bench the sides down to 4ft to code. This would save you on shoring cost providing you have the amount of area to slope or bench the sides. The excavating contractor you hire should be able to advise you correctly. Safety is First.
