Wood Stairs Not Flush with Walls

My dad's handyman just did the wood stairs in the new extension, but the ends aren't flush with the walls ) : My dad wants to carpet it over but these are nice oak stairs. What options could I have to make it look decent and just run carpet down the middle section of the stairs?
