what is the best & economical way of updating a brick floor to ceiling fireplace? would framing & covering it with wood or other material be the way to go & have the the least amount of mess?

By updating do you mean:

Changing a wood burning to gas?

Changing the look but keeping it wood burning?

Or what do you have in mind? Just covering it up?

I would think whitewashing it would be an easy option to change it up and make it look more modern. You could also use a TV wall mount with a sharp looking TV on it to cover a majority of the fireplace face.
