Laminate flooring in a business

Hi i'm opening an office/lab and would like to put laminate or rug in the office (not lab). I've been told that laminate will look nicer after a few years. This is a low traffic office and we figure we will need to put a rug in the waiting room and hallway.

Will I need rug in the office and meeting room?

Thoughts?

Hi Jeanette:

Good laminates will definitely outlast for the most part carpeting, The secret to a laminate is the grade of pad that you put under it. The white foam is the cheapest and also provides the least amount of cushion, There are high density pads that are available and will run 30 to 40 cents per foot. That is what I would recommend.

Laminates will dent or crack if a sharp, heavy object is dropped on them. Laminates today vary from about $1.00 per square foot to over $5.00 per square foot. About $3.00 will get you into a good range.

However, there are new vinyl products available on the market and either go down in strips, or interlock and are installed the same way as laminate. This is what I would recommend. They come in a variety of colours and wood patterns. The range is about $5 to $7 for a good grade. These have a cork backing on them, so a foam pad is not necessary. If you are on concrete, they will also provide a good insulating factor. Also, because they are vinyl, they are much quieter than laminate.

We just installed the vinly interlocking stips in some high traffic vacation cabins. Also, when you see the wood highlights in Wall-Mart, these are the vinyl strips.

I would be tempted to use this product throughout your office. Much easier to maintain than carpet and will outlast it in the high traffic areas. Also, they can be repaired vey easily by qualified personel.

Hi,

Stewart here of Sct Floorcoverings. All you need do is make sure you have a good laminate. The 15.3 mm carries a commercial warrant. And place felt pads under the furniture legs.
