Bathtub liner vs. replacing the tub

I have this job posted already, but i wondered if any professionals could tell me the pros and cons of an acrylic tub liner vs. putting in a new tub. I have an old shallow metal tub and we want to have the tub replaced by a professional, and do the rest ourselves. The space itself is a tight squeeze as the tub is surrounded by 2 exterior walls and a pocket door, so from that I understand a one piece acrylic tub/shower combo cannot be installed. Does anyone have any advice about the surrounds and bath liners? Here's the pic of my hideous master bath.

Your bathroom situation is like ours. It's an old home and the bathroom is an after thought being tiny and needing a reno. We too want to have the tub replaced professionally and do the other work ourselves. I'm thinking of extending out and putting a new door way a little further into the hall to make our bathroom somewhat larger but, this would not affect the tub can put in. I'm not even sure we can remove our old metal tub which is badly in need of replacing as it is on two outside walls and one interior wall, I have no idea what I will find tearing it out and doubt it will even fit through the doorway as it is now to totally replace it.

I have heard not so good things about liners but, that might be our only solution and then tile around the three sides for a nicer look over all. I'm really worried about tearing out the old tub for fear of what I will find AND because we'll likely have to take out a wall to even get it out of there totally. I looked into resurfacing but, couldn't find anyone local to do it so that it doesn't have an orange peel look to it. I'd love some pro input here too.

Thanks for posting your picture, it's almost identical to my situation except I dont' have the pocket door.
