Building shower base

What is available in learning how to build a shower base properly?
Shower is in basement, would like to tile base and walls.

While Dave is correct in that the schluter system is an excellent consideration and suited well for the DIY. However, given that you are building a shower pan in the basement a quality "old school" pan liner and sloped mortar bed installation will also work very well when done correctly. As in any building situation, there are still best practices, such as wraping the liner completely over the curb, adding pea gravel to assist in liner drainage etc.
