Kitchen Vented Hood

Small 3 story building. How do I find out if the duct is supposed to be used for a hood? It's located at the right spot but it was not connected before.

I have a great trick. Attach a vacuum (it has to be on the blowing end) to the vent, and see of you can trace the air coming out of a vent on the exterior of the building. You should be able to hear the vacuum, and of course feel the air coming out.
