Hi Will,

Usually you would ask the contractor to provide you with references. They should be able to give you some names and numbers of a few previous clients that they have worked for in the past and what they did for them. Was there any particular reason you were asking? Other than being a wise and cautious consumer?

Hi Will,

The best place to find a reference is from the contractor. He should be able to provide you with a phone number or two, as well as some pictures of what he has done. Another avenue is to do a search for the contractor on the internet. There are sites like this one(HandyCanadian) that post replies from customers. You can also look into the BBB and see if there are any issues with them.

Hi Will,

The Contractor should be happy to provide you with atleast 3 references of recent work completed. You do not need to feel bad to request this from him. If he is reputable and has nothing to hide he will be more than willing to have his previous customers sell his services for him and at the same time give you some piece of mind. You can also check out a site called Homestars. Alot of consumers use that site to report good, bad, and very very bad contractors. The internet is a very powerful tool to do your research. Many consumers who have been taken have written about it somewhere. Google the company and go from there.
