What is the feedback on mixing cabinetry in the kitchen?

Our kitchen cabinets are still pretty new and we are renovating and adding more cabinetry.. but matching the cabinetry might not be and option. We are at odds with this project, I would like to add a totally different concept and he would like to match it as close as possible. With the new styles now I think there is all kinds of options.. Any thoughts on this?

I would suggest painting the older cabinetry , or sanding and staining it , and do the same to the new cabinetry. Mixing different colors of cabinetry is nice if you , for example have the island in a different color than the rest if the cabinetry, or the lower cabinets in a different color then the upper cabinets.. but having half of the kitchen one color or type of wood and the other half another color wont look consistent and there wont be harmony.
