We are installing split face travertine tile to a wall in a wine room. Can we put the tiles just on the drywall or do we need to mesh behind it?
I am wondering this because of the weight, but the guy we bought the tile from says the weight is vertical on each tile so there is no need for mesh.
Any thoughts on this?
You can put the tiles straight on the drywall. The weight of the tiles will be held up vertically by the lower tiles and grout. Mesh is an old school way of strengthening floors so the tiles won't crack.
Hi,
Stewart here of Sct floorcoverings.i would suggest installing a good tile Backer board before installing your tiles.make sure that you screw the Backerboards to the wall studs. If your tile are more than size 8 inch x 8inch use a good polymer modifiied set cement-white if your tile are colour bleed sensitive! if they are 8x 8 or less in size use a good wall tile glue that has a Natural stone rating. Make sure you have full contact with your glue when you press the tiles into it.
