Has anyone realized on this board that all these shows on HGTV and DIY are geared to sell what people already have and to SELL the idea to you that your home is OLD STUFF and you need to go out and SPEND MONEY at HOME DEPOT or LOWES etc to remodel your home and bring it up to "TODAY'S TASTE" (WHO'SE TASTE??)
TV is NOT fundamentally an entertainment tool it's a SELLING TOOL and these shows--they go to places that are really nice and comfortable looking in many cases and say how ugy or OLD the look is and how they have to "help" the people put in a "newer" look--we live in an old home (150yrs old) and those basements look beautiful to us. Most are comfortable and bright!
The ones where people have problems and want to solve them are good but the sell you home and design shows are nothing but gimmicks to SELL!!
They are insulting to people in homes they love because they make fun of what people are now living with and are happy living there.
I like home improvement shows because I learn a lot by watching them--BUT--I do not like when they mock or make fun of the people on there.
I saw one a couple weeks ago and they were just tearing the place apart. You can be critical and professional at the same time.
Dave,
The real estate market has evolved and the way homes are sold has radically changed. Yes, HGTV tapped into this however they didn't create it - these buyers were already out there, shopping for homes.
Buyers are searching not so much for a house but a lifestyle these days and homes which showcase the modern lifestyle they want to have are the properties which sell. We call this 'Model Home Mentality' and its a fact that only 10% of buyers can see past what is in front of them. That means dated, cluttered homes will turn off 90% of their target buyers if they aren't polished up and showcased properly.
Warmly,
Heather Cook
