Hello,
I have a basement that I intend to rent and need to widen the window according to Alberta laws. I have contacted a company to cut the existing window and create the opening needed. My question is, what will the cost be for installing the new window, drywall and painting needed? I am in Calgary, Alberta
Hi Angela,
i am in Toronto Ontario, so the as far as the price it is not the same,
however,
you have to make sure the window size will fit in two areas,
first you need the escapable size to fit your Egress fire escape code,
second there is a thing about glass size to meet your daylight requirements,
other wise you will have problems with the city,
for the work itself,
you will have to make sure they install metal lintel outside, foam the window and cap it all,
if you need more details contact me,
thank you
harry C.
I am always amazed at how people budget $500 for these.. here is what it will cost, done many times:
-window: from $150-$400+
-by code window well must now be from 30" out and 1 ft each side, also only way you will get cutting equipment in for exterior cutting (includes window well retainer and drain to weeping tile): $800-1,500,
-cut hole from concrete company: min $400
-re-frame hole and insulate, seal, flashings, install new window: $800-$1,200
-optional(redo trim and drywall inside the basement around window: $400
min. cost will run from $2,500-$4,000 depending on how easy to access the work etc, most I did were at least around 3 grand to do properly and a total job as described..if windows above grade far enough you save the costs of wells.
