Cost to install new footing and support post

We are looking at buying a home and recently had an inspection done on an old house. One of the major concerns the inspector raised was a support post in the basement (stone foundation, dirt floor) has an undersized footing and the post is inadequate.

Can anyone provide an estimate for replacing the footing and post?

Hi Simon

You will need and engineer that can determine for you the dimensions and thickness of the required pad and the size and strength of the tele-post. Also any blocking required between the floor joists.

Have them make this determination then you can ask for quotes from qualified contractors. With the proper engineering info contractors can then quote accurately.

You may need a building permit as well which is not expensive but will help with resale of your home in the future that the house structure has been re-built properly and to code

Cheers

Dave

I am very interested in this question as well.

We have had some shifting and I noticed a footing in the crawlspace that does not have a telepost; the shifting (a drywall crack) is occurring in that same part of the house. I have contractors coming to give me a quote but I would like to do my homework and find out what is involved and what the approx. cost is to get telepost added.

I have contacted a structural engineer. The current information I have is that it will cost 300-600 to do an engineering assessment with drawings and to help determine what is required for a permit.

The engineer I contacted also gave a rougher estimate for the replacement of the footing and post being a few thousand.
