What would the cost be to upgrade a condo's fuse box to a circuit breaker? The condo was built in 1975.
Only licensed Electrical contractors may do this type of work as an ESA permit must be taken out and a disconnect / reconnect booked by them with your local utility as well.
A LEC (licensed electrical contractor) will offer a written quote, provide you with removal of existing equipment and installation of 100 amp to 200 amp panel and assess if there is a requirement needed to repair or replace the meter, incoming lines, grounding and bonding for your water main and gas as well. If he doesn't check or ask to see your water main and gas lines, it is a sign of a possible non-compliant installation.
Depending on the city, this work can be booked from within 2 days up to 2 months (peak upgrade dates).
As far as pricing, this work could cost from $950-$2500 with many variables which must be considered. If you have a 60 amp installation, prepare for a complete service overhaul which would be a mid range cost.
If the pricing is under $1000 be wary as some unlicensed people will not provide ESA inspections and tell you they can do panel changes without permits and hydro disconnects. This is not only dangerous to you, your building and to the the worker, it is also illegal and may affect the resale of your property as no permit for electrical generally means illegal and unsafe work.
I hope this information assists you and your ability to hire a professional for this job.
Rob has provided a good answer.
When you say condo do you a free-standing dwelling or an apartment type? Why I ask is that there are some panel insets that are made to replace the fuse inserts in many older panels. That would keep the costs down substantially.
My only other concern is that you said 1975, which was the prime time for aluminum (AL)wire. While I am not a believer in the all AL wire hype, if you are going through the trouble of upgrading your panel you may want to look at that also.
