Hello,
I recently had solar panels installed on my roof. In the process the company realized that there would be some reinforcing needed with the roof trusses.
I believe the amount of time spent working was less than 8 hours with two men and we are being charged $600 (not including cost of materials).
Is this reasonable or am I being overcharged?
I would say that sounds perfectly reasonable for the time spent.
I had to spend $450 for an engineer just to do the calculations, to say the trusses could handle the load and I provided the drawings for him.
If I could find two tradesmen to work 8 hours for $600, I would hire them in a heartbeat.
In fact, I might question why the rate was that low...
Cheers
John
I think we might know why the rate was so low... nobody likes going into attics, but some people have no choice.
It still amazes me to see roof trusses being made from 2x4 after the roofs are sagging after 10 years, does snow load not count to engineers for long term structures? Come on.

That is actually a fair price, don't forget that charges are not only based on the labor itself, but it is a fair amount, not high at all..
As noted by the other responses, the charges are resonable. Companies all have overhead costs, such as office expenses, liability insurance, WSIB, vehicle costs etc.
HOWEVER; if the company you hired to do this project is a solar panel specialist I would have expected them to have checked the suitability of your roof construction for the panels, before giving you the quote to do the job.
Regards,
John.
