Attached or Detached Garage

You are thinking about adding a garage onto your house. But should you have an attached garage or detached garage added on?  There are a few things to consider before making a decision.

Of course there are benefits and drawbacks with both types of garages. However, it is important that the decision you make is which type will best fit your needs. A good thing to do is to write out the pros and cons of both a detached and attached garage.

One of the first things you should consider is what size and shape is the lot you are planning on building the garage. If you have a narrow low that goes back to an alley, a detached garage may be the best choice for your lot size and shape. However, a detached garage will eat up a lot of the space and yard you have. This may be where an attached garage may be the best fit for your needs, as you will still have a good portion of your yard for the family and pets to enjoy.

Another consideration is the intended use of the garage. If it is to keep out of the weather from your car to your home, then an attached garage will be a better idea. If it is to set up a workshop where you can have a space for projects, then a detached garage will be sufficient. Plus it could offer more space than an attached garage. There is also the safety hazard if you store a lot of flammable items, such as paint, fuel, stains, or other harmful materials. If you have a detached garage, then these items will be away from your home.

Additionally, you should take into consideration the styles in your neighbourhood and the condition of your home. Attached garages are newer architecture and if you live in an older area or a historical home, then an attached garage will look out of place. Plus it could detract from the charm of the neighbourhood and salability of your home.

If you live in a neighbourhood where there are other attached garages, a contractor will be able to use an existing wall. This will cut down on the cost. A detached garage is building a structure from scratch, including digging out and pouring a foundation. Remember, adding a garage, whether it is attached or detached is a large home addition.

Another alternative is to have a carport added instead of a garage. There are different types of carports, such as vinyl, wood, aluminum and steel. Steel is the cheapest material to use and the most durable. Moreover, it is termite proof, fire resistant and fairly maintenance free.

A wood carport may be more attractive, plus may enhance the look of your home. A steel carport will not be as attractive and could detract from the look of your home as well as the neighbourhood. Vinyl and aluminum carports are less expensive alternatives and may provide a better curb appeal than steel.
