Michael was great to work with! He came out with the quote quickly and offered great suggestions to improve our kitchen in our new home. We had a tight timeline as we have a baby on the way and he was able to shuffle things around to ensure that we had the work done with time to spare. He went above and beyond, adding features to our closet that weren't in the original plans and even looked at one of our appliances that needs repair for us. He worked efficiently and never left a mess! He's given us a lot of great ideas for further renos down the road as well. I'd definitely recommend Michael to others looking for work.
It's definitely stressful to completely gut a kitchen and start anew. Through ups and downs and all arounds Micheal made the process, not only doable but bearable. His expertise and vision is what I trusted most and I definitely was not disappointed. He never veered from the budget and still managed to get me exactly what I wanted and more. HIGHLY recommended the services of The Renovators Of Canada!
Thank you Marti! It was great working with you on your kitchen renovation. You made our job easy! We appreciate your business and your kind review.
Michael and The Renovators of Canada Barrie
Working with Micheal at TROC was extremely stressful and I would highly recommend going with another contractor. Michael seems like an approachable guy. He was hired to turn our investment property into two legal units and renovate the home. The 3 biggest issues we had when working with him were:
1. He could not keep to a timeline
a. We hired a contractor because we knew it was too much for us to take on. We ended up having to manage a lot of the renovation ourselves as it became increasingly obvious he had poor time management and organizational skills. He knew this is an investment property and keeping to the timeline was crucial. We made sure that he understood this when he was hired. This renovation took 3-4 months longer and it would have taken longer if we hadn’t become involved in finishing it ourselves and hiring our own people.
b. When spoken to repeatedly on not keeping to his timeline he stated that he only had two people working for him and that it was hard to find people to work. (I now understand why). Most of the time he only had one person working at our home even though he had told us that he had a team and he would be able to get it done in 4 months.
c. He stated that he would be installing the 2 kitchens himself and refused to bring in any help. He insisted on doing them alone and that he would have both kitchens done in 8 days. It took him over 4 weeks.
2. He could not keep to a budget:
a. We thought we were getting a great deal when his quote to reno our home came in at 70k. This quote was only used to give him a 15% deposit and then it was never referred to again.
b. We spent more than 200k even though we put in a lot of time and labor ourselves to cut down on costs.
c. He ordered extras for the kitchens, like light valence and crown moldings that cost thousands extra that we never agreed to. He refused to give us a receipt for the kitchens as he gets a discount price from Rockwood Kitchens (he is a previous employee) which he then marked up. The light valence was never installed.
3. He was extremely unprofessional:
a. He stated he was one of the cheapest options since we would be paying the trades directly, which is true. However, most of the trades that he brought in were people he had not previously worked with.
b. He refused to meet with the inspectors from the city, and told us that was our job as the homeowners.
c. It was obvious that once we began the reno process that he had never done a project of this size before, even though he assured us that he had, because he didn’t know any of the regulations or bylaws.
d. Also in terms of his unprofessionalism, he took material from our job site that he never replaced. We had to order and deliver supplies like enough drywall to cover half a house, because he wasn’t organized enough to have it there for when it was needed.
I really cannot stress enough how stressful this renovation was because we had to
deal with Michael, there are so many examples, too many to include here. We are
trying to view this as a learning experience, however, we definitely regret choosing him as our contractor. We lost out on potential income, as well as having increased debt at the end of this. I wish I could say that at least the quality of the work was good, considering how much extra time it took, but sadly I cannot even say that. We spoke with the owner of the company to try to inform him about our experience. However, our conversations with him proved fruitless. We want to warn other investors and homeowners, and would strongly recommend staying away from this contractor.
We worked side by side with Bill on his investment property - as he mentioned he was there doing the work with us - he was doing the ordering, nothing was hidden or a surprise. He dealt directly with our sub trades and negotiated his own pricing based on his ever changing scope of work. We reviewed the budget regularly and Bill was kept up to date. He made decisions on the scope of work daily. He was in control of his budget. He brought in his own family members to work on this job. We take responsibility for our role in this renovation and we believe given Bill's daily involvement he should as well. There are 2 sides to every story and recommend that when you get involved with an investment property you should have a well thought out plan from the beginning. Changing scope in a moments notice because of personal preference causes delays and increases costs. When we work with investors we always find the most successful ones have a very clear path forward, they provide us with a scope of work, we price it and they let us complete it.
We take responsibility for our actions in this renovation and recognize that Bill did not have a good customer experience. We take this seriuosly and will continue to improve and learn from this.
Excellent craftsmanship and attention to detail. Knowledgeable and creative in finding solutions to issues. Michael takes pride in delivering a quality finished project. Great post-completion follow up as he returned after the project was done to follow up on our satisfaction and offered to address any deficiencies.

Michael and The Renovators of Canada, Barrie
Micheal treated me very poorly and did not take responsibility for the poor job and incompetence of his sub trades.
He misrepresented the first sub trade to me as someone he has done business with and because I trusted him I agreed that the sub trade would take on a good part of the job which I had hired Michael for. This included the removal and rebuilding of a large deck, the removal and replacing of all trim around the house and the fixing of rotten wood among other things.
The sub trade turned out to be a incompetent. Michael would not take responsibility but just kept asking me for more and more money before he would complete other aspects of the total job. Finally I threw the sub trade off the job after he did not do any work for several months but Michael just kept asking me for more money. I did give him some but when it came time for later stages of the job to be completed, I would not give him any more money until he completed the work that the original sub trade did not do. Michael refused to do any more work and abandoned my job.
By my calculation he ripped me off for approximately $7000.
I subsequently hired another contractor to finish the work who did a very good job, however it was Michael who should have done this job for the money I had already paid him.
If future customers insist on using Michael as their contractor I recommend getting everything in writing and not giving him too much money upfront and grill him on his sub trades who, as it turns out, he may never have used before as was the case on my job.
Response to Eric s review.
Eric was never treated poorly. The Renovators of Canada never treats their customers poorly. We have a 5 star rating on Facebook and a 4.9/5 on trusted pros for a reason.
Eric stated there was a misrepresentation of the sub contractor hired. We have a team of sub contractors and occasionally open some jobs to new sub contractors. We are very clear if we are asked if we ve worked with a certain sub before. We hired A-Frame to work on Eric s job. We vetted the company by checking their insurance, wsib, business number and references. A-Frame checked all the boxes so we hired them.
A-Frame began work as planned. I checked on their work regularly and was in constant contact Eric. Shortly after that A-Frame was showing up less and less, with fewer and fewer employees. I immediately contacted A-Frame. They came up with an excuse of an emergency job that needed to be attended to and said they would be back very soon. Unfortunately they never came back. A job that was estimated by A-Frame to be 3 weeks carried on for over 3 months. Which involved numerous phone calls and false promises by A-Frame. Eric and I agreed to cancel A-Frames contract.
I hired a new sub-contractor to complete the job and was able to stay under budget in spite of paying A-Frame. As a result of coming in under budget I was able to financially compensate Eric for the delays.
When it came time to build the deck I invoiced Eric for 50% of the deck to cover materials. Eric refused to pay. I suggested that he come to our supplier and pay for the material directly. He refused.
Eric mentioned that we abandoned him. This is completely false. We are still willing to build his deck once we receive payment.

Michael & his team came in and renovated my basement and did an amazing job. They sat with me and conversed with my family as to what we all wanted and came up with an amazing design that was both functional and affordable.
They stayed within my budget. Even with a few bumps along the way they never left my side and made sure I was happy.
Thank You TROC
Thank you for your kind words Ashly. Your basement renovation looks great - communication is the key to a good renovation and we take pride and keeping everyone informed about the job and what is happening.

One contractor came in and ruined my bathroom, ripped it all apart, took my money and left me hanging! Michael and his team in barrie came in and put it all back together, it took a little longer than originally discussed but they were great with communicating back and forth with both me and my husband and overall we are beyond satisfied with our beautiful new bathroom!
Thank You The Renovators of Canada!
Thank you Kimberly, we appreciate your patience during the renovation. We did take a little longer but wanted to make sure that the quality we expect was met, as well as wanting to ensure you would be happy with the end product not only today, but for many years to come. Thank you the business, we appreciate it very much.
Michael, and the Renovators of Canada, Barrie team.
Michael and his team came to make my bathroom more accessible and took out my tub and put in a beautiful walk in shower with the most amazing herringbone tile. Michael and his team worked very hard to get the job done in a timely fashion and was very respectful in my home. I even showed Michael my leaky kitchen tap that my husband never got the chance to fix before he passed and Michael went and replaced the whole unit free of charge. I would recommend Michael and the Renovators of Canada for any future renovations.
