#1 CREDIBILITY CHECK:

The BBB warns us "if a company changes its name or goes bankrupt, all warranties issued can become worthless". Like your credit rating, a contractor's track record follows them around! Call the BBB for a credibility report. Use the name of the company and the owner's name for this background check. You can reach the BBB at 905-526-1111.

#2 REFERENCE CHECK:

If they claim "15 years in business" ask for some references from 1995. When you call these references, ask if the work performed was actually foundation work. Also, ensure the work was performed under the exact same name appearing in this directory. Ask for names of customers who have requested warranty service to see how the company responds to call backs.

#3 LICENSE CHECK:

The City of Hamilton Building Services Division will tell you if the contractor you're looking to hire is properly licensed. Again, use the company name and owner's name to aid in this check. A Masters Drain Repair License or Plumbers License is required for weeping tile. A Building Repair License is required for foundation repairs. #4 INSURANCE CHECK:

Job site liability insurance protects you if an accident occurs, causing property damage, that the contractor can't afford to fix. Ask the contractors' insurance company name, policy number, expiry date and phone number - Then Call! Workman's Compensation (WSIB) protects you if an accident occurs, involving one of your contractors' employees, on your property, causing injury or death. If your contractor is not registered with WSIB, the injured employee is entitled to sue you, "the homeowner"! Request a WSIB Clearance Certificate (good for 60 days) to protect yourself!
