I'm building one slope wood canopy over the windows of an old house. The canopy is 19' feet wide by 5 feet long and will be sitting on a 2-2x6 beam, which is sitting on 3-6X6 wood post.
The exterior wall is a full 14 inches structural brick wall, i will anchor a 2x6 ledger board to it.
My question, should my rafters sit on the ledger board with a bird mouth or should i use brackets? Why and what is the difference in therm of load distribution.
Pitch: 9:12
Thanks
Always a bird's mouth for me it is structurally stronger as the load is displaced down onto the beam and you are not replying on just a mechanical fixing to hold the rafters in place.
Always have the rafter sit against the ledger and use either hangers or pressure blocks this stops the rafters from being able to roll over.
Hi
If I read your drawing right. No birds mouth at the ledger, think half a roof and the ledger is the ridge. If you cut a birds mouth at that point you reduce the thickness of the rafter by the cut,not a good idea, you also have no edge to nail to presuming this is a closed roof not a pergola.
Hope this helped
