Can someone tell me if there is a long road to entering the drafting profession through on-the-job training or something like that? I feel like the private career college program I completed which involved a little bit of AutoCAD was not enough to prepare me for a job involving AutoCAD. Is there any way I can become a drafter for residential buildings or is drafting in a millwork context the most accessible way to become a drafter?
You can learn on your own & start your own company but most businesses will not hire you without a certificate/degree. Check your local colleges, that is where to start.
I owned one of the first drafting company's on the web, back in the late ninety's. For housing you need certifications, no one will hire someone who can't draw to code. If your thinking of mill work, good luck. You will need to know about shop drawings. I used to hire cabinet makers who were fed up and train them. After I sold, large mill work company's would approach me to see if I was interested in going to China to train, was already using India but they were getting expensive.
Good Luck
