Hi, I am in Peel Region and I have QuietRock EZ Snap installed on my basement ceilings which has built in sound proofing. Would a City inspector accept this as an alternative to having a sound channel like Sonopan?
Hoping to avoid ripping out expensive fire rated drywall for a basement apartment.
As per new regulations for Secondary Suites you must have the all of the min. requirements to meet ceiling fire code and min. sound transmissions ratings:
-sound dampening material as per min. rating
-sound channel
-1/2" drywall
In Alberta newly introduced in the current (2019) Code is the requirement for STC (Sound Transmission Class) ratings to separate secondary suites in homes. You would need to select an assembly that meets the required rating of STC 43 or use the prescriptive measures described in the Code which include the application of resilient channels. Keep in mind that flanking paths of sound transmission suggest that a higher rated assembly should be selected in order to achieve the required rating. There should be a permit application for the suite and the submission should show how you intend to achieve the required rating. Perhaps your drywall supplier can assist you with the selection; from what I see of this product online it doesn't seem to achieve the requirements.
