What thickness of veneer to use for staircase?

Hi,

I just finisched my sons staircase. All I have to do now is to cover the new stringer with wood veneer. I am a bit upset because I cut my fingers. I am planning to make a templet out of thin cardport, trace it to the veneer and glue it on.

What thickness of veneer and what kind of glue would be best?

Thank you,

Matt

G'Day Matt,

The type of glue for a veneer would be contact cement. It can be sprayed on or rolled on. Sprayed is best but protect the areas around as it does put out a lot of over spray. Personally I would recommend 1/4" or something with thickness.

As this is your first time anything with a paper backing rips pretty easy. You also have to apply the contact cement to the back of the veneer.

The tricky part is joining them together because contact cement really sticks together and if you mis-align you will have to cut if off and start again. You can use dowels to place on the stringer to align the pieces up then remove them one at a time.

Hope this helps.

Hi Scott,

Thanks for your Reply.

Contact cement was my Idea. However the 1/4" wont work since the riser is installed so it will show. All I have to cover is the Stringer not the Skirt. on the outside where you see it. Someone I met says I could use preclude veneer and iron it on.There is a Company here in Montreal called CEDAN.1/8"would be ok in that case what Clue would I use, since I cant use Clamps.

Tks
