Exterior door frame - should we redo it in wood or composite? Which one is a better choice?
We live in montreal and wondering if woood is probably a better choice, since composite is hallow?
Just because composite is hollow, don't think that wood is better for living in Canada. I have installed many metal frames and doors as well as aluminum store doors and frames. Providing that you use a spray foam insulation and caulk the frame well, there is no worry about composite frames. As long as you are taking the old one out, it is a good chance to add a bit of extra insulation to the usual space behind the door frame, use spray foam for this area as well. Install the frame, spray foam it, then next day cut any excess foam off with a hack saw blade or sharp knife, and caulk it with a good quality caulk. If you are having it installed by a contractor, also insist on this method, you will not be dis-appointed.
Composite is more durable and weather resistant than wood for sure.
