I saw these guys working down the street from my home and they seemed to be doing a nice job of my neighbour's yard. I walked over and started a conversation with Ben. He seemed like a nice, reliable young man and I really wanted to give him some business.
Well, these guys are unbelievable. I asked for a quote to dig a trench 25 feet long, and then back fill it after I had some piping put in. I asked if he could core a 4" hole through the foundation for me. I told him that I needed the gravel and the soil piled separately. He told me that it would cost $500 to do the job.
The first day on the job, they broke the gas line. I was out getting a large tarp at Ben's request to put the soil on. When I got home, the gas line was spewing gas, and they were packing up to leave the scene!! If I hadn't arrived when I did, I am sure they would not have stuck around. They hadn't called anyone, even though the gas had been spewing for 10 minutes! As it was, I called 311, then 911, and then got in touch with ATCO to resolve the situation. Apparently, they had called Atco just before I got through to Atco, but they called at my request and they didn't call anyone else. This is the FIRST thing they should have done. I called because I highly doubted that they were going to!! By the time that the fire department showed up, they were long gone, but not until we had managed to crimp the gas line to avoid a catastrophe.
While ATCO and the fire department were at my home, I could see them watching from the end of the back lane, but were too gutless to come and talk to the authorities. They were here for all of 1 hour.
To top it off, they did not come with the tool that they needed to core a 4 inch hole through the foundation wall, so they couldn't possibly finish the job in one day.
They stopped by later and did a bit more work for a total of an additional 2 hours.
The following day, they stopped by for an additional 3 hours and did a bit more work, but still did not have the coring tool.
They finally showed up on the Saturday and spent 3 more hours helping me to install the piping I needed installed. It was basically already laid, it took 20 minutes to core the hole through the wall (and I helped Ben do it!), and I did the other two with my own tools. For this, they charged me $600!!
They left the yard a complete mess. All they wanted to do was get the hell out of Dodge. I was presented with an invoice for $1470, $930 dollars over the quoted cost. The reason was that they had to come back 3 times, primarily because they forgot the one tool that was needed from day one! If they had brought the tool in the first place, they could have had the job completed with a slight delay while the gas line was repaired, and there wouldn't have been as much damage done to my yard as there was.
I will have to bring in another company to clean up the mess they left. It was a nice gravel area for our RV to sit on but they managed to destroy the weed mat and have spread mud everywhere. I will need to get someone else in here to clean up the mess that they left behind.
Stay clear of these guys. If you need excavating, call someone else. If you want mental midgets with shovels, these guys might be able to meet the bill, but it is highly doubtful.
Ben told me the last day on the job that "I'm a Jack of all Trades and a Master of Them as Well!!" He's not even an apprentice at one trade, let alone a Jack!!
I had my own contracting business for many years and I never treated my customers like this. If I screwed up, and these guys did, I ate the additional cost.
From the reviews that I have read about them, they won't be around next season.
