Excellent work!
Matt is an experienced, knowledgably person. Communicates well and is a "no fuss, no muss" kind of guy.
Matt came for the 2nd year in a row to extend the patio he built last summer, to go across our garage door area. This was a nasty spot in the winter because of improper grading done years ago, so very icy, and unsafe. A safety issue for sure.
Matt reworked several different angles of grading to assure that no water/ice will build up in that area, but will drain away well. Installed the same stone as the patio.
We are already planning next years project.
Matt is also a wood stove installer/WETT tech.
We highly recommend Definitive Edge Landscapes.

My experience with Definitive Edge Landscapers has been far from good. I don’t even know where to start with my issues but the biggest one had to come with our deck. My very first email to them asked for a quote on a deck and right away I mentioned that I did not want wood railings. From there we talked about aluminum railings again mentioning anything but wood, and we talked at my front door about what colour would look best! From there I asked for a quote on the price difference between pressure treated wood and composite board for the deck. He ended up quoting me for composite with aluminum railings and pressure treated wood with wood railings which I didn’t catch because I never wanted wood railings to begin with so why would that be quoted? Super annoying situation because when I ended up questioning part of their work and finding out the issue, to switch to aluminum railings the actual cost difference was not much at all!
A lot of other questionable work as well, raising our backyard and expecting the neighbors to put in a retaining wall (sorry what?) suggesting a way to continue the outline of our patio that’s easier for him trying to convince me it would look nice (didn’t fall for it) and just feeling like he didn’t want to do our project anymore. He lacks in finishing touches and attention to detail. When he thought he was done our project there were a couple of issues including one I mentioned maybe 2 or 3 times and then he had me go and look around as to what he still needed to do.... sorry? why am I doing that? Is that not something you should do? And we weren’t just talking about my issues, i’m talking about the gate latch (which i mentioned 2 or 3 times), missing sand in between patio stones, missing cover for our railings. Things that he should have gone around to look for and see what he needed to finish. Now fast forward 2 years later Fence is falling down because they didn’t use long enough screws. Deck boards coming up. Railing falling apart. retaining wall failing.
This project started in March 2020 and with covid there may have been delays but he has never come back to finish the job or fix his mistakes. Now we need to find an actual landscaper to redo/fix his mistakes.
We at Definitive Edge Landscapes feel for Breanne. As her property was basically a swamp from neighbours raising their grade so high, nothing could drain out. We installed an amazing French drain system and raised her property as well as running any eves troughs under grade. Her neighbours, not wanting to split the cost of fence work with Breanne, or allow us to take down their shotty, rotted fences. We had to tie into existing neighbours fence posts and 2 years later, who knows what else neighbours have done to our fence. We build plenty of fences and always use 3 framing screws. As for the retaining wall she mentions, plenty of options were given to her in quotes of long lasting retaining wall systems. She opted to go with the cheapest solution of using only 2x6 boards. We had told her they were not going to last. If any company knows retaining walls it s us, reflected in our many projects. (check us out on Instagram) Breanne had changed her mind on railing and width of stair case after it was built and inspected and passed. We still tried to accommodate her needs by making it bigger but in the process, boards as well as structural beams weren t going to match up. As for polymeric sand, anyone knows it doesn t last forever and needs to be maintained every few years. We are actually surprised she chose to write this review after 2 years when we had completely transformed her property from a swamp to a very attractive patio and accommodated her upgrades (there were many) that we switched the job around and did extra work, free of charge! Including only charging cost for 600 sq of a mega grande pavers upgrade, Detail on a fantastic looking shed and replacing any sod that had died from lack of homeowner watering. Sorry you feel this way Breanne and best of luck with your future endeavours. We continue to build high quality jobs with top craftsmanship in the industry. As we have done for nearly 20 years. We appreciate your input.

Our neighbor recommended Matt to us when we needed to redo our front steps and walkway. Matt was very experienced and knowledgeable and he was able to provide great suggestions and guided us through design and material selection. As part of our house sits on an angle, Matt’s team had to reshape our existing steps and custom built us a set of modern yet durable steps. Matt’s team also expanded our walkway to make our entrance more grand and functional. We are so happy with the design and the finished product. We got so many compliments.

We hired Definitive Edge (Matt) to build a 10 ft section of fence and gate. He built it beautifully and was reasonably priced. Matt also moved the downspout to accommodate the fence. I really respected Matt's communication for the entire project, updating me with every milestone.
I would use Definitive Edge again.

We hired Definitive Edge (Matt Downey) to remove an interlocking stone patio in our backyard and install a new, much larger stone patio in its place. Matt listened to what we wanted and made some great suggestions for ensuring that the grade was corrected and the new stone matched up to our pool deck. He kept all his commitments (including timing!) and we are very pleased with the way the job turned out. Matt and his team respected our property at all times and cleaned up the job site very thoroughly upon completion. We would highly recommend Matt to friends and family.
