As other people have said, if you want to build a deck or a fence DO NOT USE this company.
It does not have a proper Alberta License (Edmonton is not enough for the type of work he offers). He does not meet deadlines and the quality of his job is terrible. He was supposed to build a deck under two feet and we ended up we an over 4 feet deck that was not secured any were. We filed a complaint with the Service Alberta Consumer Investigation office and requested our deposit back and the removal of the work on-premises which he refused. Waiting for the resolution of the investigation (which is not going well for him) to proceed with further legal actions.
If you want a deck build, DO NOT use Edmonton Deck and Fence. Jim can't be trusted to complete the work. He can't be trusted to do it properly. I had hired him to rebuild a deck for me, after 2 months the work was not finished. I have not heard from or seen him since the end of August. He has received about 75% of the estimated price but only completed 45% of the work he contracted for. I had to fire him because I have no idea when I will hear from him. WARNING WARNING, do not give your dollars to this company.
PLEASE, FOR YOUR OWN SAKE, DO NOT HIRE JIM/EDMONTON DECK AND FENCE. We hired him to drill fence holes and put in fence posts. He dealt with both us and our neighbour (who heard he was good from someone else). He had us put down money before starting the job but after talking to our neighbours we realized they didn’t have to which made no sense. We had a date set for him to come do the work and he didn’t show so the work was postponed a couple weeks. When he finally showed up we gave him our yard plan (so he could see the boundaries) and he went to work for the day. He didn’t show up the next day or the one after that. We kept contacting him to figure out when he would finish the job. He blew us off multiple times. So finally we, along with our neighbours, called a meeting with Jim. He showed up and was ridiculously rude to us. Prior to him starting the job we had agreed upon the number of posts and where we wanted them. He went against our agreement and put more posts and had them closer together despite what we discussed. We were home while he was doing the work and not once did he knock on the door to talk to us about it. So we were charged extra. Before he left our meeting he said he would charge us just for the holes he did since he didn’t do the rest of the work. He said he would etransfer us the agreed upon amount (both parties agreed) since he didn’t even come close to finishing the job. He said he would send us the money right away.
We didn’t hear from him for a while so we tried calling him. We got ahold of him a few times and he said the money was coming. But eventually months went by and he ignored all our calls. My husband was using his phone so Jim recognized the number and ignored him over and over. We called him on my phone and he seemed completely surprised and flustered because he wasn’t expecting to hear from us again. He said he couldn’t pay us the money because his business was going under and he had no money.
I kept track and his website never went down. This summer I saw he was hiring people to work for him so I felt pretty upset to find out he was still doing business despite him owing us money. We worked with our neighbours finished the job ourselves . We had to fix a bunch of the holes so there would have been less hassle if we had just done all of it on our own.
We learned a very valuable lesson about contracts or lack there of them. No one could do anything because we didn’t have anything in writing.
I REALLY hope no one else has to go through the trouble we did.
Jim,owner of the Edmonton Deck and Fence company build my fence last May 2017.Even though I did my homework I did terrible job choosing contractor. Jim sounded like he knew what he was talking about. Jim used poor quality pressure treated wood. My understanding was that the quality of the wood will be the same as in the fence of my neighbors. He told me this fence will last for at least 20 years.I was not present when my fence was built. I was not watching progress of his work. Many of the fence boards had to be exchanged right away and few months later we found out one of the post is not holding. Although Jim exchanged the fence boards refused to change the post when I called him few months later for the second complaint. Told me to talk to Rona (I guess for selling him faulty post). What's worse is that he told me he will fix the post but he will charge me for the post and service call. Each time I called Jim to fix the problem he avoided me, never came on the day he promised to come. I had to call him several times.
My advice to potential Jim customers: Write detailed contract. Make sure contract includes his contractor license. Watch him every step of the way and look what kind of material he is using for the project.
I would like to compliment Jim McCartney & his worker Dan, for the wonderful job they did, came in at estimate, no hidden costs, pleasure to have around, work excellent I am very pleased, would recommend this company to anyone, will certainly call if I need other work done ..Thanks guys..
These guys were fantastic. They went over and beyond what I would expect from a contractor. I had some tough fence-line issues to deal with (trees and roots) and they worked through it. They stuck to their quote and were courteous throughout installation. And of course, the final product look amazing. Definitely recommend!

Complaint: Jim is not to be trusted, I sub-contracted from him to build decks and fences.
He did not pay me for the last 4 completed jobs that I finished.
I filed an lawsuit against him and won my case,he still refuse to pay me for my work.
To all consumers out there do not give jim any money up front, Jim alway ask for 30% up front before starting the job, do not pay him.He will take your money and hide.
Never pay any company up front unless the material is delivered on site to your property first, and ask to see the invoice before paying.
Jim has no knowledge in construction of building decks n fences
Warning warning stay away from edmonton decks n fences (Jim)
Complaint: This is the worst company I have ever came across. I would never even hire Jim if he did work for me for free. I worked for Jim for just about a month and quit due to his lack of knowledge, constant corner cutting and just overall total unprofessional.
I now have been chasing him for my pay for over a month with no response.
If your reading this- stay far away from him.
