Beware of the estimates that this company provides, don't choose them because the estimate seems reasonable. Also Mike does not even measure properly. He just walks the perimeter and gives an estimate of how big the deck will be. He also didn't measure the deck properly to see how much railing will be needed. During the build he realized he didn't have enough deck material and ended up having to much railing material. The incorrect measuring definitely reflected in their misleading quote. We had to pay 42% more then the estimated material cost. The fence they had to take down was much dirtier when they put it back up. After they had finished the deck, they did not clean up the deck surface to get rid of all the debris and dirt left behind. I think this is a very disorganized company and would never choose them again in the future.
Response from Engel Construction
Thank You for your feedback Janine. We appreciate all feed back, negative or positive. It helps us as a company continually learn what our customers are asking for and what they need when trusting us with their very hard earned money. Unfortunately, the first time we heard of a concern from our customer Janine was at the same time we emailed asking for payment she had not yet provided. Her Fiance' had many conversations with us and at no time was there a question of concern at any point other than pointing out that Mike measured without a tape. This was just a visit for Mike to see what he was dealing with and to estimate how long the job would take. Janine not being a carpenter assumed that was his actual measuring without understanding it would be almost impossible to order material without a true measure. He obviously went back to do the actual measurement before the ordering. The extra railing was due to the fine print on the suppliers sale of which the consumer must take into consideration waste cost and amount of purchase. This was a very good learning experience for all involved. Always look at the fine print in every situation. The very last day of deck completion, which took 2 days, Janine had looked around at her new deck and said, "It looks Great!" Still not one voice of concern. We actually asked Riley(Janine's Fiance') if he would mind submitting a review for us on Trusted Pros. We still had believed our customers were satisfied customers.
When we asked for the payment the response was instead directed towards the difference of the estimated cost of material and the actual cost. Our customers pay the supplier directly so they always know first hand the final purchase price. The final price was much more than the estimated price. Unfortunately Riley and Janine had not mentioned the extreme difference of cost at the time of purchase. Mike had the material delivered and began construction.
To accommodate a bobcat a portion of fence had to be taken down for them and Mike did have to lay it on the ground so unfortunately it did get some dirt on it. Mike has always left his work site very clean (as you can see in the pictures) and in this case while he was hauling away his own scraps he also picked up garbage in the yard that was there when he arrived. To try to make the situation better at this point was not too easy as they waited until payment time to voice concern. We still however tried our best with what was possible at this point. We chose to lower our labour amount for them, asked if there was any imperfections we could fix and offered to come clean up whatever it was they said was left dirty as we assumed there must have been a lot considering the very low ratings given but have not received a response.
I have attached photos of the deck during the actual build and upon completion. I have also attached a portion of the actual email from Riley stating that he was happy with the deck except for the estimate difference of material. Mike's labour did not change.

I hope this invoice makes more sense. I have also decreased the amount of the rock moving labour to 290.00.
Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns no matter how small or big. Your concerns are always important.
Have A Great Day!
I would just like to confirm - The cheque for the "framing Labor" will be:
Framing Labour =
10% Off all Framing Labor Spring/Summer Sale =
Total Framing Labour =
THE ONLY THING THAT WAS DISAPPOINTING was that the Estimate was way off
Note that theses customers gave us extremely low ratings and apparent complaints on Trusted Pros but still at no time during our conversations were any of the concerns ever mentioned.
