$12192 quote included 2 small bathrooms. FBD has a min. labor charge of $1000 per bathroom. We had them done at almost half FBD price. FBD final contract was $8691.46, won’t accept payment by credit card over $3000.
Mike & Bob arrived, no protection of any kind for our home. We laid down our drop cloths to protect our marble entrance, plastic to protect our vents. Despite a preliminary walk through on our expectations, they didn’t follow procedures as explained to us by Peter.
Tile + wood flooring, nails and cement were to be removed. No professional plastic bins, they loaded into open bottom garbage boxes salvaged from a Subway store, constantly dropping material throughout our home. Debris went everywhere even while walking it from our home.
Mike & Bob never cleaned anything at days end. They left behind extremely sharp wire mesh, broken tile scattered. Mike said it was a construction zone. We complained to Trevor who came out. The only night, that some sweeping was done before leaving.
The demo was excruciating and inefficient, damage to our kitchen bases each day due to lifting tile with a crowbar and Makita jackhammer. Cutting the edge before lifting would have eliminated this. They left to scavenge boxes, to empty the van, never emptied before they arrived. They rarely worked more than two hours at a time.
Removal of our fridge, dishwasher, toilet and sink was included. Bob & Mike grumbled about the dishwasher. The toilet and sink was left until the last day, they deliberately damaged our wall with their crowbar removing the sink. A screwdriver would have done the job with no damage at all. Finally we asked Mike & Bob to leave our house, they called Trevor. He wanted them to finish the floor prep and said he would get another crew to install the hardwood. Mike & Bob had broken the refrigeration water line. They claimed they turned off the valve – not true. Water leaked from our kitchen floor to the finished basement, soaked our ceiling, wet the couch and a speaker.
Mike & Bob claimed the prep was complete, I reviewed the area, said it had many nails, wires and rough areas, they left anyway. I spent 8 hours the next day personally removing hundreds of nails, and wire ensuring our floor was properly prepared.
Darl & James of DHS Flooring Installations arrived to install our hardwood. They had professional tools, cared for our home and planned out the installation. They also install for Irvine Carpet One. They cleaned up each night. My final prep of the floor and their expertise likely avoided many issues.
Complete Dec 13, we deducted for the water line repair, the ceiling repair. We have yet to determine if the speaker has internal water damage. Trevor inflated our invoice by $260 for quarter round never in our contract. In Nov. we reinstated doorstop around our cabinets $100. We paid exactly the amount deducted the day we signed our contract. Trevor insists we pay $260.
No information was supplied on using our new hardwood.
Dec 26 a board had a splintered edge. I sent a picture to Trevor asking him to come out and view this for himself. Trevor replied “this is clearly damaged following the installation”. He suggested we fix it ourselves. I requested a rep from the hardboard company come out to view the board, Trevor refused to contact rep and wants to charge us to service.
There is no damage to this board, therefore the splinter can only be product or installation related. You expect a company to stand behind $8800 product used only 2 weeks. We noticed several issues with this area and have contacted a professional.
We are totally disappointed with Flooring by Design, the lack of concern for our home, deliberate damage done by their staff, the inflated invoice, the refused after sale service.
Trevor, offered no apology, instead he said “you stressed my staff”.
Never, never, never! $8000,00 mistake. No supervision of this work crew so floor colour was totally different from that promised. Have pictures to prove complaints were basically ignored with blank statement that it would not be corrected. Many more complaints but that is the most important.
I'm extremely happy with the sales staff, install team and quality of material provided by Flooring by Design. I'm a general contractor and new to the Barrie area (moving my company from Sutton) and have used this company on my first two home renovations and couldn't be happier. The sales staff had great product knowledge (I dealt with Peter) and in my line of work I rely heavily on quality as every renovation is my business card. The products supplied by this great boutique flooring store are far superior to the top three big box stores we are used to, but still priced competitively. In fact, installation prices were less expensive. The install team were very professional, experienced and worked clean. I'm looking forward to working with these guys in all my future renovations.
Purchased laminate flooring around a year ago, finished off room with oak trim. Trevor was excellent, and the product is great. In fact we have sold our home, and will be getting new flooring again from Trevor for our new home.
