Do not use Hodgson Roofing. Dylan talks a big show but does not deliver with his work. We needed a new steel roof installed on our house after a wind storm peeled off some of the old roof. I contacted Hodgson roofing and Dylan talked a big story about everything he was going to do on my roof. When it came time to start the work I had trouble getting him to show up to start. When Dylan and his 1 helper showed up to work on the roof, they would stay for 2 or 3 hours and disappear. The days that they worked on the roof I had to walk around the house and clean up pieces of steel shingles and nails and little papers from between the new shingles from all over my property.
We have two skylights on the back of our house which according to Dylan required special trim that the roofing company hadn't sent with the order (which I later learned from a better roofer, was in fact laying with the extra stuff left over on the floor of my garage after Dylan finished) instead of getting the trim that matched the roof, Dylan went out and bought black trim and took about three hours to hurriedly "throw it on around the skylights.
When the roof was finished we had a leak in the bathroom upstairs which I tried to contact Dylan about and he seemed to ignore my calls. The only way I finally heard from him was to threaten to send a lawyer after him for the damage to my bathroom. When he did contact me he was nasty and miserable about my threatening him with legal action. He also claimed that the reason he hadn't contacted me was that he was busy with other jobs. Too busy to fix a problem he made??? I called the roofing manufacturer who put me in touch with Josh Bigger from Bigger roofing. Upon speaking to Josh I learned that Dylan had worked for him and really had very little training and experience with the type of roofing he had installed on my roof. Josh showed up two days later to fix Dylans mistake. Josh found that Dylan had neglected to apply thermoplastic sealant to a flashing he used around a plumbing stack for the bathroom. Josh fixed it and no leak since. Josh also looked at the left over roofing materials in my garage and found that the proper trim for the skylights was sitting on my garage floor but Dylan couldn't use it properly because he had no metal brake with him. Josh has since been back and fixed the skylights properly. We had a leak around one of the skylights that only seemed to leak when it was rainy and windy and that is now fixed.
When the roof itself was finished Dylan was supposed to replace eavestroughs on one side of the house (main roof and an upper dormer) when I came home from work the day he worked on it, Dylan had only replaced the trough on the main roof and it was 6 inches short at the back of the house. When I complained he showed up with a small piece of black eavestrough which he "patched into" the mainfloor eaves and spray painted it to match my troughs.
I have since learned from Josh that Dylan cut the shingles off right against the skylights when he should have left them long and folded them up the side of the skylights to keep water from getting under them. He also used cheap, crappy vent flashings on my roof when we had discussed the vents and Dylan told me he was going to use new vents that have a solar panel and a fan built in to better remove heat from the roof. Dylan was also supposed to install gutter guards on the eavestroughs when he installed them which he never did.
In the end Dylan told me because I had another roofer come in to fix his poor workmanship that he wouldn't honor the warranty on my roof, good thing I called the manufacturer and Josh Bigger decause they both assure me that if I should have problems they will be taken care of. Thanks dianlmond steel team and Josh Bigger.
I am also unfortunately having to leave a review for dishonest and lack of follow through on a job we hired Dylan to do.
Like other reviews here Dylan presents himself very nicely and tells you exactly what you want to hear. He is quick and responsive on the job. But when problems follow from his workmanship he is unresponsive and doesn't warranty his work.
It was a small job to seal a windowsill that had some cracked mortar. His cement/silicone barrier had failed (cracked and eroded) after 2 months. I have had 3 roofing professionals explain this to me and what needs to be done.
Unfortunately like other clients I am having to pay out of my own pocket again to fix his failed work.
Even asking for a partial refund from him is not justifiable and he won't do it. Says it's the original builders fault...lol
Buyer beware with Hodgson Roofing out of St Catharine's. I am just more shocked and appalled at his handling after the failure because he presented himself so well.
We apologize that you were not satisfied with your experience.
We had been contacted to assist with a leaking window above the customers front door as they had recently purchased this home (most likely without an inspection)
Upon arrival we had found that the builder of the home had failed in install the window properly with absolutely no window sill or sill trim.
The customer stated that they would be most likely getting windows replaced the following year.
We suggested using a mortar mix and silicon to temporarily stop the leaking until the customer received the replacement windows which would require a sill to be installed properly.
However, with the repair being completed as a temporary solution, no warranty documentation was provided to the customer.
They requested a full/half refund which was not given as stated above the repair was agreed upon as a temporary fix.
Photos below show the before (no sill at all)
And after (mortar mix and thermoplastic sealant)
It’s truly unfortunate in this day and age that people still feel the need to take advantage of hard working people and not honour their work or so called “warranty”. Even worse is taking advantage of people when the majority of us are currently having a difficult time making ends meat.
The purpose of this post is to ensure that no one else finds themselves in our position and financially strapped due to hiring a terrible named Hodgson Roofing (Dylan Hodgson)
Let’s start off with the first red flag that we ignored. Dylan booked our roof to be replaced the first week of February, but initially decided to not show up because his supplier refused to sell him product…. So I called the supplier placed the full order and paid for it in full so he could do the roof. He showed up with 2 other employees who were beyond unprofessional and derogatory to one another in front of Dylan (owner), myself and my 4 year old daughter playing in the backyard. Further upon completing my roof they guaranteed my roof “100 percent” wouldn’t leak.
Fast forward to July and the roof is leaking, but to Dylan’s own credit he showed up and temporarily fixed the leak. Again promised that the roof wouldn’t leak again. The damage caused from the initial leak forced me to have to replace the insulation/drywall/mud, sand and paint a bedroom ceiling/wall (at my own expense). Again in September the exact same spot on the roof leaked and caused the exact same damage inside. After several ignored text messages and phone calls from both my wife and I, Dylan finally returned and sealed the leak location. He stated that he had temporarily fixed the problem and that he would return the following Monday to properly fix the leak location. He admitted further that he didn’t seal the roof properly the first time and that he would rip up where the leak location was and ensure the roof received new plywood and sealed properly to stop the actual leak. Not sure why this wasn’t done initially…
It has almost been an entire month and Dylan still hasn’t returned. He ignores our calls/text messages and has left us hanging. Again we’re stuck with the expense of fixing the roof and the damage caused again by the same leak inside the residence.
Hodgson Roofing (Dylan) says all the right things a customer wants to hear but doesn’t actually follow through with his promises/guarantees/warranty. Sadly you can’t trust this company to provide exceptional workmanship.
Don’t waste your time, energy or hard earned money on this company only for you to have to hire another roofing company to fix their garbage work.
I can only imaging the response Dylan will provide to try and save face. Sadly he had several opportunities to do the right thing and chose not to. For those who are considering Hodgson Roofing please reach out to me as I can provide you proof with everything stated in this post. Even the text message of Dylan requesting me to not take this to social media.
