I am a busy contractor that had several customers waiting for renovation work to be done. I had a customer who wanted to have a bath tub tile surround completed by the end of 2018. I asked James, of James Devitt Construction if he would be interested in doing the work and he said he would be and also needed the work. In November I started the demolition, which took me one day. James came in that week to start the rebuilding the shower, which included drywall installation, Prova Mat waterproofing membrane, tile installation and replacement of the faucet. I was in touch with James and the customer almost every day during the renovation. The first sign of trouble came when I had to explain to James how to install the Prova Mat. Which I thought was unusual for a tile contractor not to know how to install a waterproofing membrane, but James said, ‘not to worry he understood and that he’ll do it right’. I would check in with James to see how the work was going, James would say, ‘it’s going well and looking sweet.’ James finished the tile work and there was a large gap where the tiles met the tub. He forgot to put a level on the tub to see if it was level or not and he was going to fix it with silicone or some thin trim. I explained to James that silicone is not made to fill such a large gap and that it would like crap! He tried Seal-A-Crack Caulk Strip. I got a message from the customer saying that there are some issues that he would like to discuss. The customer pointed out several things that he was not happy with. The tiles had lippage in several areas, the faucet/spout was really crooked, and there was a chip in the tile by the shower head, but the issue that really bothered him was the 3/4” gap and the Seal-A-Crack Caulk Strip. He did not like the look of the strip or the corner pieces. I agreed there were a lot of issues. I told the customer that I would re-do the tile work and that I would pay for the cost of the new tiles and materials as it was the only way to fix the shoddy work. He was very happy to hear that!
James did not understand why his work had to be redone, as his work was prefect except for the ¾” gap. I explained that the customer is not happy and I agree that tile installation was not good and that I will do anything to make a customer happy. I said; “It wasn’t fair to the customer to have to start their day off in a shower with shoddy workmanship and that they were not happy with!” James asked; “Is the customer angling for a discount?” I said; “No. The customer wants the proper tile job that he paid for.” James’s response: “I guess it’s time for me to move on then.” I also, told James that I noticed that there were scratches in the customer’s vanity sink, like someone cleaned their trowel in it and caused the scratches. He denied he caused the scratches and said he cleaned his trowels in the laundry sink and again stated that the customer was angling for some kind of a discount. When I noticed the scratches I showed the customer and told him that I would replace the sink with installation at no cost to him.
During my demolition I found the tiles and waterproofing was not installed with enough mortar. Almost all the tiles came off in one piece. Also, bracing for the grab bar was not properly secured, the copper pipes were not secured and not soldered properly. All of James’ work had to be redone! It was only a matter of time before the tiles would come loose or the plumbing would leak.
I finished the bath tub renovation. It looks great! It’s properly waterproofed with the tiles & plumbing done correctly. When I changed the scratched sink and doing the drain work I found dried mortar in the p-trap.
The customer is very happy that I was able to turn a bad experience into a positive one! I am working with the customer on more projects. I strongly feel that if you use your personal name as your company name you should do your best work!
