This guy is a scam. Once we paid him he never returned to complete the job. He won't answer our calls, if he does pick up the phone he just hangs up once he realizes who it is. The job he did do was a joke. Below are just some of the problems with his work.
The door of the shed didn't fit properly and had to be pried open.
The roof is resting on the plywood rather than the 2 x 4's
There is no overhand for the shingles and they didn't use tar paper.
The underside of the roof is open.
The wass were not nailed to the floor other than in the corners
The roof has no cross supports at all.
If this is the same Lee Schaefer that built my shed, he's a big rip off. He left my shed unfinished, and when I called him he said he's be over, and from then on never returned any of my calls. DO NOT hire this guy!
Beware of this guy, he will take your money, start your project, and then disappear without notice. He refuses to answer his phone or respond to emails. This guy comes across as nice and knowledgeable but he's as slippery as a snake in the grass. If you decide to hire him, don't pay him a cent until the job is complete.
Hired Lee Schaefer in July of 2010 to do kitchen and basement renovations. Our story is exactly like the other reviews posted. He claimed he could complete the work in about one month and gave a very competitive quote, which is probably how he lures people in. When he started the job he seemed to be working hard and doing reasonably good work, but this only lasted for about a week. We had given him a deposit for about 25% of his quote and then he asked for more money to cover the cost of materials that he claimed he ordered. We agreed to give him payment for the materials, however my fiance had started to have some nagging doubts about him. There were some things he had told us about his background and work history that were contradictory and didn't really add up. My fiance decided to call the supplier he claimed he was dealing with and they had received no orders for material from Lee Schaefer. We called him and questioned him about this and he made up a story about dealing with another suppler. When we got home that day, he had cleared out all his tools and trailer and was gone (and he left our back door wide open to boot). As stated in the other reviews, when we tried to contact him. he wouldn't answer his phone. While this guy may have some carpentry skills, he proved himself to be a liar and a scam artist. I only wish we had googled his name before we hired him. Hopefully at some point he gets held to account for his actions, in the meantime he is to be absolutely avoided.
This guy is a scam. He stole our money and never showed up. Several excuses, disappeared and not returning calls. Please avoid. Police, unfortunately, did not do anything. I don't know how the police won't even take serious action against thieves. They are so good giving you parking tickets or speeding ticken for going 5 KM over liit, but when it comes to some crimes, no real actions!
Lee Schaefer was hired to finish my basement October 2008 and promised to complete it by January 2009. He was fully paid but failed to complete the work - bathroom shower , painting, floorboards, doors, tile on stairs, plumbing - just to name a few of the things he left unfinished. Lee disappeared in February 2009. It's sad to see other people have hired him too.
I could have echoed the first review exactly. Job started off fine then he just didn't show. Took money up front, didn't show, didn't return calls, when he finally came back he had outlandish stories of why he didn't show up including getting robbed. Gave more $$ and then he didn't show again. This is for a job renovating my mother's basement. Looks like he's a scammer and she's out of luck.
ANyone else been scammed by him email me (usedregina33@gmail.com) - I will be contacting the police and I work for a tv station so we'll probably do a news story on this fraud.
Lee showed up and at first, the family couldn't be happier he was there everyday busting his ass trying to get the job done. I wasn't involved with the project so I didn't know about the fact he wanted/suggested working for cash and no contracts... by the time I met him he was drywalling and I noticed a few what I would call obvious mistakes but figuring they would be fixed not really an issue. Then, out of the blue... no more Lee. Won't return his calls... doesn't show up for work... nothing. Then I find out the family member was convinced he was a good guy just starting out and could use a helping hand and being he's been so nice PAID IN FULL for the job to be complete even though it was GROSSLY unfinished!
Now I step in... ok, let's finish the mudding/sanding and at least get paint and hopefully get a livable house since my family has been staying/paying for a motel room the last couple weeks while he's been working. Oh look... 2 weeks have gone by and already there is 4+ cracks in the drywall in the ceiling, I check, he came up short on the studs probably 1.5" or better and instead of putting up a board to support the sheet he just put PILES of mud/tape and left it hanging, slightest push and the whole seam cracked. So... yeah... replaced a few sheets that were horribly done wrong, fixed and redid the rest and now after weeks of me working to repair his crap it looks ok.
Now we move onto the basement where he originally started, same crap work... huge gaps in the drywall covered with mud/tape, totally wrong vapour barrier, electrical is shotty... but his framing work isn't horrible, I'll give him that. He told us he was a journeyman carpenter so perhaps that's why, he can work with wood but give him drywall or electrical you might as well shoot yourself in the foot.
So anyway, it's been over a month since he was paid in full to do the job, and hasn't returned our calls so I gave him a wide margin for trying to make this right. Now it's up to me to try and warn as many people as I can about his work and hopefully save people from having to deal with him... and very soon the police and small claims court will be involved also.
Got him to do some work on our house, did not finish, charged up front, and doesn't answer his calls. Since this has happened, I've seen at least 3 other people who have been burned by the same Lee Schaefer.
He's a young (mid 20's) skinny guy with brown hair. Avoid!
