His subcontractors were generally very good, notably the tiler.
His electrician wasn't as good; he didn't want anyone to help him review the parts list, and he ended up making a few mistakes which delayed progress.
Brian did a good job, generally, managing the subs; the economy was hot when we did this job, and tradesmen were very busy, but they generally arrived as planned. (They should be hungrier for work in 2016, and even more responsible).
Brian himself is eager to please. He prefers to be the designer; we had a separate designer --- a very good one --- and Brian argued sometimes that the design wasn't optimal or feasible, but we 'stuck to our guns' and got what we wanted. We should have agreed on an entire list of parts and specs right from the start; a few times, we wanted a certain quality of product, but Brian had figured on a lesser quality part when he estimated the job.
Brian was careful and kept the site clean. The cabinets he built are very solid. He built certain parts off-site, and brought them in partly- or completely-assembled.
I went on the trustedpros site a couple of months ago with my project ideas and budget . And had a lot of responses , Brian was the only one that told me I probably couldn't have done everything I wanted with the budget I had ( I did already figure that.) so we hired him because of his honestly. He started 2 weeks later , taking down 2 walls removing all cabinets and replacing them and building a new peninsula. He is very clean ,efficient and friendly .our house is 50 years old so he had some challenges but the finishes were beautiful . Also what I liked about him is if there was a problem or change he was willing to fix it or deal with it right away , still smiling even . I am so happy with the product and workmanship . Would definatly recommend Shipton construction or have other work done by this company !
Brian is a true professional - from the initial meeting to understand your needs, translating the conversation in to a clear plan, designing and managing the project , Brian maintains a stellar level of cleanliness throughout and has the experience and ethics to solve problems along the way. He is a true craftsman and a 'hands-on' skilled individual. The basement is now our go-to room in the house. It is functional, welcoming and a pleasure to use. I would recommend Shipton Contsruction without hesitation - I am already thinking of the next project in our home and will be calling Shipton Construction.
We put out an RFQ to several basement renovators in August 2014.
Although Shipton Construction's quote was lowest, it was not our main reason for selecting Brian. All the contractors we met with were professional and courteous but Brian stood out for one reason; he did not come across as a businessman. Don't misunderstand, I have a great appreciation for business people and it's not as if Shipton Construction isn't a proper business -- quite the contrary.
We were most attracted to Shipton because of Brian's obvious focus on craftsmanship. Obviously he was taking the job to earn an income but you could tell he was most concerned with doing a great job. I knew I could trust Brian to complete his work as if he were working in his own home. Although there was no official contract with itemized requirements, Brian always went out of his way to satisfy my requests.
If you are looking for a contractor who will focus on documentation and the use contractual obligations as a means of service and will meet every deadline and requirement right on spec, you should consider looking somewhere else. However, if you want to work with a polite, honest, skilled and excellent craftsman who will always have the utmost respect for you and your property, I highly recommend Shipton.
Shipton Construction undertook a complete renovation down to the drywall and bare floor of the en suite in our home. The job was done on budget and in a timely manner. My spouse and I are completely satisfied with the work and recommend Shipton Construction on the basis of our experience with the job. Brian of Shipton Construction proved himself to be an honest contractor and one that went beyond the contracted terms, at no additional cost to us, to deliver to the intent of the agreement. My spouse especially appreciated the neatness in which the rest of the house was left at the end of each work day. We would certainly use Shipton Construction for any other home renovations we would contemplate in the future.
I had a flood in 2013 of June in our house in Panorama NW. It was a partial flood not a gut job, but substantial enough. I had 2 quotes, one from my insurance company and one from Shipton Construction. I elected to go with Shipton due to the fact that he had done previous work for me and I was confident that I would receive the same quality of work that Shipton Construction has always provided to our family home.
This basement was no difference, we had a budget the insurance gave us and Brian stayed within the budget and gave us the timeline which he adhered too. He also did some work to actually improve the other renovation that was previously done by someone else, in which he actually made it better and we never asked him to. We trusted Brian to make whatever improvement it needed, be it small or big he always did it one better. I totally trust Brian in our home and he has always delivered on time, on budget, and did what you needed and even above and beyond what you wanted. I honestly can't say anything negative about Brian, he has always done work for us thru the years and we have never had any issues with Brian or his work. He also had done a home office for us when we purchased our new home, the cabinets which are permanent built ins are still after 14 years standing with no issues, he has never had to adjust them. He had also made filing cabinets of the same wood which are free standing, in other words you can move them anywhere in the office or to another location in the house and they are absolutely genius and so practical. I can't say enough about how much I have enjoyed those file cabinets. I have a set in my office main level and upstairs another set. I totally have and will continue to hire Shipton Construction for any future home projects and always refer him to others if anyone asks for a Home Renovation.
