We hired Richard Thomas to do a couple of small jobs for us. He was very thorough, made sure it was done right, and was very courteous and a perfectionist when doing his work. He also left everything very clean. We would definately recommend him, and use his services in the future. He was also very knowledgeable and able to give good advice and information.
My wife and I hired Tfin Group to renovate our basement recently and we were very satisfied with the results. We were very impressed with the quality of the workmanship and the professionalism of the crew that Richard sent to our house. We will definately have them back in the fall to renovate our kitchen.
We were referred to the Tfin Group by a co-worker who had his kitchen renovated by them and so we felt comfortable hiring somebody who's work we could see first hand. Also, when we did our research we found that this company was fully insured for liability and all it's workers were bonded and covered by WSIB insurance. This helped put us at ease as most companies do not carry this coverage.
We were happy with Richard's professionalism and his contractors especially Chris who did most of our work in the kitchendid an excellent job. We would definitely contact Richard Thomas Renovations again. Our kitchen is really really nice.

Over Promise, Under Deliver - Thomas Renovations!
Our family recently moved to Oakville, ON from out of province. My wife and I have 2 children under 3 years of age and prior to moving in- Richard Thomas led us to believe our bathroom renovations would be completed within 2 weeks.
I should mention that we have renovated several times and have had even built a home prior to our experience with Thomas Renovations.
It took Thomas Renovations 6 weeks longer than we expected to complete our bathroom renovation, with very poor workmanship and many deficiencies.
Richard's Deficiencies:
- No vapour barrier installed or insulation replaced where lighting and ceiling fans were installed
- No pee trap installed in our Ensuite shower
- Uneven and damaged marble tiles with very messy grouting
- Uneven shower tiles
- Dry wall and painting, paint was splattered on our new bathroom fixtures
- Trim installed poorly
- Construction mess in garage, driveway and home
Richard's billing:
- Richard purchases materials on your behalf, which is great if he could keep strait the difference between materials and tools for his crew
- Richard also attempted to double charge us for HST on materials ( we paid for the HST on materials he purchased on our behalf – on his final invoice he attempted to bill us for HST on these same materials again)
Richard's Threats:
- After emailing Richard with deficiencies and outstanding work to be completed Richard immediately called our home at 11 o'clock in the evening threatening to smash new windows installed by his crew.
- Richard also threatened to put a lien on our home and have my employer garnish my wages when we would not pay for the double HST being charged on our materials.
Loss of personal property:
- Richard lost our garage door opener.
I share this story as my gift to those families considering choosing Thomas Renovations. Steer very clear Richard Thomas! There are many great contractors out there this is not one of them!!
This was a nightmare client from the start, who consistently missed scheduled payments, moved in three days earlier than originally promised (causing us to move all of our equipment out of the house and the garage in order to accommodate a moving company that arrived three days before the client assured us they would), and were wildly late in delivering materials that the client himself insisted on managing on his own. And when materials he sourced did arrive, they were the wrong size, type or colour, causing yet more delays! Nevertheless, one bathroom was completed fully within two weeks (by working two crews through nights and weekends) and the second was completed one week later. NOT the eight weeks erroneously stated here.
As for workmanship, the client had NEVER expressed such concerns during the project. In fact, during the course of this project, the client ADDED more work to the scope of the contract. (Not something clients usually do when they're unhappy about workmanship.) Our crew was given less than three weeks to gut and complete major structural renovations to not one but two bathrooms. Then the client's moving company showed up three days earlier than originally planned, in essence cutting our already very tight schedule by 20%. We were required to work Saturdays and Sundays. As for guarantees that all work would be completed within 2 weeks, we have a policy never to promise completion dates, simply because of the many factors out of our control (i.e. delays in client-managed sourcing of materials, discovery of pre-existing construction problems, delays in client payments).
Regarding threats, no such threats of "smashing windows" was ever made and this is simply libellous. We did indeed put a lien on his house as he currently owes over $18,000. When he was presented with detailed invoices supporting this balance, he simply grinned and said "life is tough. You should learn to relax." He presented behavour throughout the project (early move-in date, multiple missed payments, both for contractor-paid materials and labour, and the inclusion of additional work throughout) that, in retrospect, clearly suggests he had no intention of paying his bills, regardless of the contractor hired.
To illustrate just one erroneous statement from this client, pee traps are not installed in shower drains. If they were, where would the access to the pee trap be made but in the ceiling of the room immediately below the shower. This client's assertion that he "had even built a home prior" seems doubtful if he doesn't even know what a pee trap is or where and how one is installed.
I could go on about this client, such as his unilateral decision to transfer a deposit on a second project he contracted us to do (his basement) to pay for most of his outstanding bill, contrary to specified terms of the contract he in fact signed. He also pressured us to do a "cash deal" so as to avoid paying HST. We informed him that we are not that type of company. In other words, refusing to rip off Revenue Canada and expose ourselves to serious fines didn't sit well with this client.
Due to his failure to pay the balance on his bill, our lawyer has indeed registered a lien on this client's home and we continue to explore other legal options to collect what this client agreed to pay in a signed contract.
Sometimes contractors are less than honest. But, believe it or not, we too sometimes come across clients who are the fraudulent, incompetent and downright malicious party in the relationship.
To other contractors who may be approached by this person, Jason and Shannon of Oakville: If they invite you to do work, run! They will have likely already decided that they will try to rip you off, hoping that legal costs to collect, along with wild and totally baseless accusations will discourage you from collecting what's owed to you!!!
Considering that it was a major addition to our house, we were thrilled with the service, workmanship, tight budget control (in fact, it was brought in well under an already competitive budget) and great communication throughout the project. Also, the site was kept immaculately clean and all parties were very flexible in meeting several change requests made along the way.
An excellent job!
Fail,
Richard will do an excellent job of selling you a job. Then hand you off to one of his "less flexible" subordinates. The proceed to destroy your budget that you agreed upon. The promised "flexibility" is gone out the window. He has an amazing ability to state the absurd with a straight face: "the material cost of 500 ft of hose is $1200".
He threatened to get his crew to come over and tear the materials out of our house. Me and my wife had such problems with the Richard that we had to kick him out.
Run,
Richard Thomas of Thomas Renovations
This client failed to pay her materials invoices not once but three weeks in a row, contrary to the written terms (payable immediately upon delivery) that she signed. All materials invoices were accompanied by the original supplier reciepts. Excuses were that she would "pay next week." When three weeks went by and the client still did not clear her tab, we had no choice but to leave the site. In the process, we lost over $5,000 in materials costs, as well as an equal amount in unpaid labour. The "flexibility" she refers to here is for our company to have continued to finance her renovation; something we explicity do not do, as per the terms of our written quotes. Far from kicking us out, we left due to ongoing unpaid work and materials.
Richard was able to quickly resolve some crown molding issues that two previous contractors could not. This demonstrated his professional knowledge and experience. I am very pleased with his work and would recommend Thomas Renovations to anyone considering small to large projects. Richard not only resolved our problem, but also made some great suggestions for future projects that were sensible and practical. Richard is a person who knows his business very well. The project was finished in a timely manner, produced the expected results and without leaving behind a mess. As a big bonus, the cost was less than expected! Thanks Richard!
Richard and his crew did a bathroom renovation and house paint job; the job was very well done, his crew was meticulous with the finishing and he personally ensured every detail was looked into. In addition, we found Richard very easy to deal with ... we requested changes which he accommodated reasonably, was very accessible, accommodating and knowledgeable. He gave us excellent ideas, helped with colours and design, etc. Equally important, the job was done on time and cost was within the estimate.
Overall very happy with Richard, we will use him again for sure, he came recommended, we have recommended him to our friends and recommend him to anyone who wants a quality job.
Richard and Cameron were very pleasant to do business with. They were extremely personable, polite and did an amazing job cleaning up at days end. we are very satisfied with the work they performed and would recommend them to anyone considering a contractor.
Richard was such a pleasure to have in our home. After having a bad experience with another general contractor it was a relief to find an honest, trustworthy hardworker. He is professional in all aspects of his job. He was always on time, he communicated with us throughout the renovation, letting us know each day what work was completed and what he was working on next. He is a perfectionist when it comes to his work and ALWAYS asks for feedback. He really demands total satisfaction from his customers. He has an eye for what looks good, and we are so glad we listened to his suggestions along the way. While in the middle of renovations we almost threw out a 30yr. old table that was looking its age. Thankfully Richard stopped us. He restored the table beautifully and saved us us bundle. We proudly show off our home to friends and family and have received rave reviews! His final bill did not go over one cent from his initial quote. Richard was flexible with our schedule, kept our home clean and the project finished within our time frame. We'll be using Richard for anything we need down the road and confidently recommend his services to others.
