We had tilertech renovate our main bathroom this past spring from a tub to a full size tiled shower as well as they did new backsplash, led mirror and new bathroom fixtures.
They were professional, clean and a delight to deal with, so good that I hired them to tile our main floor this October
I hired TilerTech to do a complete renovation of my condo bathroom in April 2015. I have been slowly updating the condo and had previously had two other contractors put in a new kitchen and new flooring. I would have hired either of these other contractors again had they been available. My experience with TilerTech has been frustrating, stressful and very disappointing. I would not use them again and I would not recommend them.
The Pros:
- During the hiring phase, communication with TilerTech was prompt and friendly; they were very accommodating and respectful of my budget.
- I have a functioning bathroom and I like the overall look of it.
- The installer who did most of the work was consistently friendly, respectful, approachable and easy to work with.
- They absorbed the cost of having the building water shut off and repairs made to the plumbing.
The Cons:
- Despite having been sent to their preferred supplier to select tile, toilet, and fixtures, nothing that I selected was installed. The fact that the tile I had selected was not available was only identified two days into the project, AFTER the bathroom was completely demolished. The toilet and fixtures I had selected were not installed and what was installed instead was not discussed with me beforehand.
- Errors were made on a daily basis: The wrong size and shape of toilet was installed, the mosaic trim in the tub surround was "forgotten" and I caught the wrong type of tap for the tub and the wrong vanity before they were installed.
- The quality of some of the work, in my opinion, was less than professional. They did not remove the old lino, but cut along the edges, leaving a ridge under the new lino. The tub overflow does not line up with the faucet, tap and shower head. The hot and cold water were backwards on the vanity faucet. Caulking was only half done and was frequently done without cleaning first leaving a dirty look. The towel rod and toilet paper holder were not centered or level. I could go on...
- Communication proved to be very poor. I needed to track them down to ensure that they got the keys to the condo and to get updates. Several of my emails stating my concerns went unacknowledged. They didn't arrange for a walk through to inspect the work upon completion; instead, they asked for immediate payment and then got upset when I identified deficiencies that needed to be addressed. I was yelled at via email and on the phone and hung up on!
- I know that things don't always go smoothly when doing renovations. However, the mark of a professional is how they respond when things go wrong. TilerTech took no responsibility for the numerous issues that arose on this job with the exception of forgetting to put in the mosaic. The rest was someone else fault, primarily the suppliers' or mine.
In the end, they addressed most of my concerns to an acceptable level with one outstanding item- a defective tile in the tub surround, which I agreed they could replace "under warranty". They said it would take a few days for them to ‘figure out what tile they had installed. I paid the remaining balance on the job (silly me!) and was assured that the office would send me a receipt the next day.
That was over six weeks ago. I still do not have a proper receipt nor has the defective tile been replaced.
I would first off like to say thank you to this homeowner letting us complete and although decisions and mix ups become a fact in this project we are glad that we could address any of the outlined issues that you had and left his project with both parties HAPPY thanks .
Earlier I had written a review regarding my renovation of two bathrooms and the problems that occurred. I haven't had the time to update the review, but wanted to thank Marco for promptly coming to the house in January to repair and replace the trouble spots (tiles needed different grout) and completing the upstairs bathroom. He diligent and thorough and I have no issues since. I appreciate that Tiler Tech came out early in the new year to address the isses and fix them. Thank you again
My experience with TilerTECH was they were sincere and bent over backwards to ensure I was satisfied with the end product. Their representative responded to my request for a quote on the same day and was very knowledgeable about the problem and potential underlying issues. I received a quote shortly after our first meeting and TilerTECH staff were able to clearly explain each of the line items to my satisfaction. Their staff went over the contract and warranty and provided a schedule for completion in detail while accommodating our availability. When we experienced unexpected problems they resolved them on the spot demonstrating experience and knowledge about the best approach to ensure a good solution. They stood by their warranty and made two or three visits to repair minor grout issues.
Update: I had some cracked tiles and grout and these were taken care of quickly but the final caulking was not done well. Old caulking from the temporary finish was not properly removed and new caulking was not added. I have also been trying to have someone come in to correct this and tighten a loose shelf since June of 2015- it's now almost April 2016! None of my calls have been returned and when I reach someone they always tell me it will be dealt with within the week and I never hear from them. Finally, the worker they sent for the last job cut tiles on my toilet seat gouging the plastic. He also dropped some tile pieces in the tub gouging that. I pointed these out to him and he said it would be easily buffed out, which I assumed he would do. This did not happen. All in all- we could be happier.
Original Review: We were very pleased with our bathroom re-do. We had old tile removed and retiled and the area behind the toilet tiled as well. There was a minor mix-up with the tiles TilerTECH received from their supplier and as soon as I noticed they remedied it immediately. The whole project was done on schedule even with the mix-up. Marco and David did a good job and were both very helpful.I was able to reach them whenever I had a question and we got our bathroom back sooner than we expected. We would use them again any time.
We had Tilertech repair our bathtub upstairs and install a half bath in the basement. We have used them before and were quite pleased with the results. The work was done well just as expected. We will definitely call them again and recommend them to anyone needing work done.
My sorry encounter with TilerTech began on Oct. 23, 2014. I called for a quote, and co-owner Tyler Fenwick said he leaving for Mexico that evening, but would send his salesperson Andrew Harris out to prepare a quote Saturday, Oct. 25. Andrew showed up at the agreed time and was very professional and polite. He returned the next day with a prepared quote for $4,683.00, which we both signed with the understanding I would e-mail the other owner (Marco Corazza) at deposit of 25% - $1,170.00.
As noted in the customer review of Jan.19, TilerTech is not registered with Service Alberta as a prepaid contractor, so I included the e-mail confirmation of Marco's acceptance of the deposit when I filed a complaint with the Consumer Investigations Unit of Service Alberta on Nov.19, 2014. The complaint has made it's way to a Senior Investigator - Trevor Addison.
Marco was very eager to start the project as he noted, "You have so many "cool" finishes." LED lights, frosted glass, heated floor, etc.
Tuesday, Oct. 28, 2014 - Marco and helper Eric showed up around 10:30 - shortly after an abrupt phone call from me. They were not aware that I had arranged to take a day off work to explain tile pattern and review job, but I had spent nearly $2K on marble and frosted glass tiles, and I didn't want to leave any room for error.
Friday, Oct. 31, 2014 - Marco said he "really struggled" getting the thermostat for my floor in, and Eric advised me not to look behind the mirror at the LED connection. Attached are the photos of what they were talking about - what professional attaches a string of LED lights to the mirror by knocking a hole in the wall, then using duct tape to secure it? Also, notice the single screw on the side of the mirror to attach it to the wall. Very professional. I have also attached the picture of the thermostat; drywall gobs all over the wires - Marco's handy work.
Their own electrician, Craig who was sent to fix it, called it "illegal as hell", and gave up after pulling the thermostat out of the wall only to find the internal wires attached to a rats' nest of silicone. He put it back in the wall saying there was no way he had time to fix, and wished Marco wouldn't try to be so helpful. So there it sits - $1200 for a 3 x 5 foot space of heated floor, that does not work. I have also included a picture of my bathroom, and I have put red feathers in every gap of grout large enough to hold a feather. Also worth noting is the crooked transition between the bathroom, and laminate. Clearly the marble was broken off with a nipper. Same thing under the floating vanity - you can see a space of at least a half an inch even with the baseboard on because they did not use a wet saw.
It gets better. On Nov.5, 2014, I received a call at work from Tyler. He said that because he had been in Mexico, he had not been able to review the quote, and Andrew under estimated the cost. He would get back to me. Click.
Called Marco, who admitted , yes, they would need me to pay more - even though they signed the contract. The price had now gone up from $4,683 to $9,600 - but Marco was sure Tyler would come down to $7,400 - I just needed to be reasonable. When I got home from work that night, the first thing I looked for was my contract which appeared to be missing. I called Marco, and he admitted that yes, Tyler had been on site, and took the contract after he had talked to me at work. I now had no proof a contract even existed, so I told Marco in no uncertain terms that if I did not have that contract in my hands before the end of the day, I would be contacting police and they could explain to police why they would work on a site with no contract in place. He returned it by 8 PM. I have paid $3,400, and told them just to not come back.
Honestly, if you don't have the background or expertise to complete a project then you should not be taking it on. I am so sick and tired of every idiot with a half-ton calling himself a tradesman.

UPDATE
We are still unhappy with the “finished’ product. The floor is the only repair that was completed successfully, and it was just laid over top of the original ripped one. At this time we have 3 different colours of grout in our shower, sloppy caulking, none mitered baseboard join and so much more. The owner of the company is aware and had asked us to say that he was trying to accommodate us but the co-owner would not.
The first day of the again spread out 2 month (with 5 days access while we were away) repair work the co-owner installed our sink in backwards. The plumber (not a licensed plumber) came the next day to re hook up the plumbing and had to change it all. It was not until the next day when we went to use the sink that we realized that it was in backwards. The co-owner was upset that we wanted it installed properly and asked us why we could not leave it backwards!!!
It does look a bit better than it did and the floor is fixed. But needless to say we have decided to cut our losses. Also we were told that the bathroom is completed to a professional level and they would not return. That is fine as we do not want them to return.
We were also told before they returned to do repair work that they had their Provincial Licensing to operate legally. As of Nov 10th 2015 they still do not according to Service Alberta. We don’t appreciate the lying to us on such an important issue. Please call Service Alberta for any complaints and to check any company you choose in the future to verify their legality to operate.
3 Day Bathroom
A 3 day $8600 bathroom reno started July 2nd 2014 to date still not completed properly. Countless issues, but here is what remains as of Nov 28, 2014. I have decided NOT to have them return and filed a complaint with the BBB and Service Alberta. Pictures can speak for themselves.
Customer service /Professionalism:
1. Tyler told me they had ordered the wrong vanity by mistake. It was the one I had asked for but less than 24hrs later and 2 weeks before the start date I had asked for a different one. He explained that I can take the one that was in and it would be installed the next day or I could wait a week for the proper one. I waited. Later that day he called to say they have one in Calgary and if I PAY for his gas he will go get it. I refused. Amazingly it was there the next day anyhow.
2. They were a no show 3 times. No explanation given. Late every time scheduled as much a 9am turned into 2pm. Weeks to a month between service calls.
3. I was text from Marco "We will do all we can to try and and achieve your standards of excellence" when all I asked for is a level floor!!!
4. Asked if I would take a different tub as they had an extra one. I did say yes but looking back It was a mistake.
5. Texts from Tyler saying how is workers are ignoring him.
6. Conversation at home with Tyler cursing his crew for costing him thousands in repair work.
Site cleanup:
Tools left out, drywall dust & paint splatter. Used our magazines to cut objects on. Left he toilet box in our back yard. Painters tape in the toilet (that has clogged and been snaked) Poor quality workmanship
1. Non bathroom paint used on walls and trim. (Once we realized we purchased the proper paint ourselves)
2. Drywall is not mildew resistant
3. We were told twice that clear caulking had been used but it "turned" white.
4. When painting they did not take down the fixtures or outlet covers.
5. Back of vanity and trim "hacked" with hand saw. We had a niche cut in that was redone many times as it was cut wrong (too high and long wide) and then framed with 1 by 2 white boards. This was corrected after many attempts of patch work.
Thankfully Tyler showed up and told Marco to redo it not patch it. The sticker in the picture was removed on the final visit even though it was mentioned in the beginning. But by removing it they damaged the baseboard (the one they dropped off an left) and also had to replace both tub surround metal trim as mentioned above the one side is pieced together.

We decided to update our old pipes to ABS pipes. The plumber had to make holes in the floor and walls to complete this. We obtained the services of Tiler Tech to repair the 4 holes in the wall, re-do our 1/2 bathroom and re-tile the floor on the 1/2 story of the house. It went as follows...
Pros
*friendly Cons
*poor communication between Tiler Tech and ourselves. I always had to be the one to text or call to ask what the plan was.
*laying of the tile was poorly done in a few spots as tiles next to one another are uneven and not flush. Our bathroom door now scuffs a certain part of the floor when closing and opening the door. It never used to do this.
*there was a cracked tile in front of bedroom door that I had to ask to be fixed. Marco tried to cosmetically fix it so it wouldn't be as noticeable. The cosmetic fix made it look worse and tile had to be replaced.
*ran out of mosaic and tile. Luckily the tile place had an extra box on hand. However, it took a week and a half to get new tile in as it had to be ordered from Toronto.
*Tyler failed to tell Marco that I wanted the tile laid in brick pattern as discussed in initial consultation. He "assumed" I wanted it laid in stacked pattern. A positive in this is that it looked good in the end.
*Tyler failed to tell Marco that I wanted tile baseboards...which is probably why we ran out of tile.
*they often did not show up when they said they would. They were sometimes 1-3 hours late.
*when medicine cabinet and light were first installed by employees, the cabinet wasn't centred properly and the light was sitting directly on top of the cabinet. Also, the light was not secured to the wall properly which allowed me to move the whole light fixture away from the wall.
*Marco used his finger to smooth out the silicone where the tile and wall met...not a silicone scraper. This made the silicone spread up the wall about a 1/2 inch in a lot of spots. Paint does not stick to silicone. I was told to run a layer of DAP over the silicone...it wasn't done for me.
*they were still at the house the same day we were flying to Europe on Oct 9. Marco said he could only stay for an hour but still wanted payment for unfinished work which he said would be finished upon our return. I refused. Marco stayed a bit longer and finished enough work that we were comfortable enough to leave for when we got back. Marco left at about 1:30pm and we asked him to get Tyler to call us before 3:30pm to take care of the bill before we left to the airport. Marco said he would call Tyler right away and assured us Tyler would call very soon. First call from Tyler came in at 3:40pm while we were driving to airport. Unable to answer at that time. One call and one text came in from both Tyler and Marco while we were driving to and checking in at the airport.
*a hole in the wall by our back door made by the plumbers needed to be fixed. The first fix was terrible. There was an uneven dip in the wall where the hole was filled. It's like they used a different thickness of drywall to patch the hole. After the second fix, we found out the drywaller did not tape the seams which caused cracks in the mud to appear when pushed on. The hole had to be fixed a third time. Basically, there is a piece of drywall under a thick layer of mud.
*we shouldn't have paid the remainder of our bill until all the work was complete. It took them from the time we got back on Oct 25 to Dec 15 to finish up minor things (siliconing & mudding the hole at the back door). I felt we were low on their priority list. The excuse was mostly that they had out of town jobs which was taking up much of their time. It wasn't until an unpleasant phone call was made to Tyler that time was finally made to complete the work.
*got $150 off the invoice only after I voiced my displeasure to Tyler about the whole renovation experience.
*this job started Sep 22 and ended on Dec 15...a week shy of 3 months...for a 1/2 bathroom, the 1/2 story hallway and mudding 4 holes in the walls. Granted, we were away for 2.5 weeks but still...not acceptable.
UPDATE 2015FEB10: Further to the $150 compensation, Tyler has agreed to extend our warranty from the completion of the whole job. The warranty would originally have started sometime in September when the tile job was complete but will now start Dec 15. We appreciate the gesture which has alleviated some of the anger & frustration we held for Tiler Tech. While I will never use Tiler Tech's services again, it's time to move on with no hard feelings any longer. I wish them well.
This is unfortunate that some jobs are never easy to complete weather it be from the clients unreal expectations or clients just don't understand the steps to renovations. I understand that clients want everything to go without a hitch in a perfect world they would but this is not a perfect world and things do happen, it seems that some clients are more op to put the blame on someone else but themselves so I would like to take this time out and explain more realistically what happened. The clients and our company did have a hard time to communicate as we had to work on their convenience we could only be there after 5pm everyday to finish the finishing touches, we are only open from 8am till 5pm. when the contract was signed we had made it VERY clear as per the contract that we MUST have access to the home during these hours weather it be someone home or a key was left for us to enter the premises to finish during these hours, these agreements were not meet at all. The tile was installed without out a hitch for the floor, we did order enough for the floor and yes we did make the mistake of not ordering the tile for the baseboard and ordered it immediately also paying the rush order as it was our fault this did not stop them from using any part of their house what so ever and we do apologize for that, mistakes do happen and they were also compensated for this, as for the mosaic the client had a few last minute changes that yes did put us in a bind but again this one was not the companies fault but did do our best to get the tile their that week and no the tile place(supplier) did not order an extra box as a middle man supplier would NEVER do this. As for the light and medicine cabinet that the client is referring to is before the job was even done and secured completely it seems that this client is being again unrealistic and trying to just gain ammo for the cause, if you ask that question now I guarantee it is properly installed as we are finished now. The only reason for us to still be working at their place the day they were leaving is again the hard time to be able to enter the premises we did everything possible to finish this job before they left for their trip but due to the plumber that doesn't work for our company had to keep coming back to fix and finish plumbing 2 months later this is why we could not finish our drywall mud and tape to close up the holes, yes it was frustrating for both parties. I would like to finish this off by first apologizing and that this was totally preventable if we could have just stuck to the contact and able to enter the home as per the contract stated. We did do a lot of extras for the client NO CHARGE re-in burst the client $150.00 at the end of the job which he did say "thats all he wanted" and also let the client off $400.00 before we even started the job in good faith as this is what the client requested, again we do apologize, we always do our best to satisfy clients so long as they stay realistic
