is it feasible to raise a roof?

we want to raise the roof on the house we are buying, as it is a regular roof and ceiling in a chalet type home. we would like to know if it would be feasible to create cathedral ceilings?

Nicole, if I understand correct, you want to take a flat ceiling in your house and make it vaulted, with exposed beam work. I have done this many times with pictures to show.

I am assuming that you would have to rip the roof down and rebuild it. I would advise getting permits from the city. We have always taken the engineered trusses down, and rebuilt the roof with hand cut rafters. There is a method used in order to keep your R value (insulation) to code, this is key when doing a renovation like this. Whoever helps you with this, make sure there is a plan for proper ventilation in the roof or you could be battling mould sooner than you would like.
