basement drywall

I have double paneling on my basement walls. When I removed one section, some of drywall surface was pulled off(glue). Can I still keep the drywall and mud it and sand or should I completely remove to the frame? Trying to do the least amount of work.

Well you have 2 options,
1. remove the paneling and remove the glue from drywall and mud the craters you're going to create.
2. remove the drywall and replace
I have been exactly where you are right now and chose to fill the cracks and crevices with mud and it turned out like new.

Rob is correct in that if there is not a lot of patching, then the repair option is best. Over if there is a lot of patching and some glue remains on the drywall then it is best to start new. Before undertaking any patching, I would first check to see if there has been any moisture or mould issues.

Hi Michael,
I would go for the patch work if it was me. It sounds like it would be easier, with less renovation garbage to dispose of as well. Either way you do it, you are going to have to apply compound and sand it, so the obvious choice would be to use what is already up there if it is not too damaged.
