Things started great. Excellent quote and easy to deal with the owner Dean. Job progress swiftly at first with his Ozie journeyman Daniel working off my lighting diagram. All went well until the end when I discovered he was installing gimbal trims with PAR20 bulbs. I hang art and had asked for lighting that would flood the walls evenly I had marked eyeballs on my lighting plan. The Gimble trims and bulbs Dean installed produced stripes on the wall totally unsuitable for my stated requirements. Dean attended the job for the first time and said if he'd known he would have done things differently I started to research bulb options and sent him information on BR builds that have a wider flood 120 degrees as opposed to the PAR 20 which are 40 degrees. After some debate with Dean arguing that the PAR20s were floods he replaced one light with a BR bulb which was a major improvement I said ok that would be better.
He purchased the replacement bulbs and sent me a further invoice for what was to be the labor to change them. Dean himself now went to change the bulbs but found that the one his journeyman had installed was cracked and called me to announce that the BR bulbs didn't fit Gimble trims What followed was a series of texts in which he said he would not absorb what he referred to as my mistake I guess he meant my suggesting BR Bulbs. I said I was not a professional electrician so how would he rely on me or blame me. He further took the position that he had given me what he specified in the quote. In looking at the quote it did not say eyeballs or gimbles but did list PAR20 bulbs which as a customer I had no idea how these bulbs behaved I had paid for the job in full at this point which turned out to be my mistake. Although Dean said he would finish the job as quoted, he walked. He left two motion lights uninstalled , a dimmer that flashes as he installed to wrong one and three counter plugs on the kitchen counter at differing heights. I offered to pay for the change of the 20 trims to eyeballs and asked him to at least finish the job as quoted but he did neither nor responded to my requests.
I am left with a good job overall but lighting on all the main display walls which I now have to have changed This means I have at least 20 bulbs and trims I paid for that I must change and repurchase eyeballs and bulbs and pay the labour to do so.
Black Box is a good company for basic work. The owner is not knowledgeable about current LED lighting options or trims and above all did not in my case pay attention to my needs despite my writing Eyeballs on my lighting plan and having discussed my need to light artwork evenly. His abandonment of the job leaving work I paid for and needing correction shows a lack of professionalism. My mistake I guess was trusting in what I had though had been a good relationship and in paying in full when he was nearly complete.
A very disappointing ending.
That said his journeyman Daniel was excellent it is Dean the owner who let me down
Further to our initial review we have found these problems with having hired Black Box Electrical
Our motion detection lights were all installed without switches resulting in the lights coming on continually when we are on our decks which is a major gaffe. This is not easily resolved without opening up the wall as we have spray insulation
Also our furnace thermostat was installed with only a two wire connection instead of three meaning we cannot run the fan control to circulate the air between floors Another basic flaw that is not easily solved now we have a finished interior.
We have Led fixtures over the dinning area and island both of which were installed with the incorrect dimmers which do not allow for much range of control in light level. These can be changed but again this shows a lack of knowledge and or attention to detail one would wish for.
I have notified Dean the owner of Black Box of some of these problems and had no response he was paid in full but left the job incomplete and is not standing behind his work
It is truly unfortunate as I thought initially I'd found a good Electrician but these problems prove different
I have since had to hire another electrician to diagnose my problems.
