We hired Daryl to renovate our kitchen, redo flooring and do a built in shelf in the bathroom. It started very well, he was attentive and responsive and we felt confident in the reno. He was patient when we added additional electrical work and demo. There were time delays (due to COVID), but the reno was estimated to take approx 3 weeks.
From the beginning, we had concerns with the sub-contractors attention to detail. The flooring and transition strips had to be redone and fixed numerous times, and to this day there are still gaps in the floorboards in 4 places and the transition strips are loose.
There were other concerns with attention to detail:
1. Some of the quarter round was crooked and had to be redone
2. One of the new shelves in the bathroom is not fully stained and one is longer than all the others
3. The dishwasher was never hooked up
4. There is a gap between the new floor and the old floor in the bathroom that we were left to solution
5. One of the kitchen backsplash tiles is already cracked, and some of the grout has holes and is cracking
In addition, there was a lack of understanding on our asks:
1. We asked for a built in microwave, and we were given a simple shelf. I was given the wrong measurements and had to return the microwave I originally purchased.
2. We asked for a built in rack for our baking supplies. It never came and when he went to order it, it turned out to be plastic and very cheap looking.
3. We asked that the kitchen pantry have pull out shelves. 4/7 shelves are pull out.
Additional delays:
1. There was a mix-up with the cabinet ordered and had to wait 2+ weeks for the correct one
2. A cabinet slow close never came and a cupboard shelf arrived week of Feb 14.
3. Reno started Oct 18. Floors were still being fixed Dec 22.
We paid in full in December, even though we were still waiting for a cupboard shelf and slow close, and we messaged February 11 on the two outstanding items as well as ongoing concerns we still have with our flooring, and there has been no response (it is now Feb 28). The cupboard shelf arrived from the kitchen manufacturer, and she was the one that advised the slow close is not coming.
We now have to bring another contractor to come in to look at the floor and transition strips. Based on the lack of attention to detail and the lack of communication now that we have paid, we would not recommend.
We had a large unfinished cold cellar in the basement of our home that Northern Restoration helped us finish recently. Daryl and team are knowledgeable, communication excellent, and the job was on time and went smooth start to finish.
Many thanks to Daryl, Mike and the Northern Restoration team for our lovely new living space.

To understand why Daryl and his crew get this 5-star review, we have to go back in time a couple of months. When we bought our house, the home inspector poked his head up into the attic and told us that there was some "minor damage and some mould" on the plywood from what he determined to be an "old leak". In fairness to him, he inspected the house when it was completely covered in snow, and could not see the state of the roof. Had he been able to, he probably would've taken a closer look and would likely have found that it was not an old leak but was in fact still active. To his credit, he did tell us it was nothing to walk away from the deal over, but that we should have it looked at ASAP after taking possession.
Enter Northern Restoration: We put out a request for a roofing contractor on another website and Daryl responded that he could come out and take a look at our convenience. We set a date and time and Daryl was there. He physically went up into the space and looked around and came down with pictures and a diagnosis of the problem. He also went around to the outside and could diagnose the problem (except for the extent of the damage) from the ground. He wrote up a quote and sent it to me and told me exactly when he could get started.
Naturally we wanted to do our due diligence, so we got a quote from another company who didn't even go up into the space. They wrote up a quote (which, full disclosure, was for less than Northern Restoration's) but I noticed that there were some items that Northern had written down that was missing from theirs. When I asked them what the difference was, they told me that they wouldn't be able to provide a proper estimate of the amount of wood required to do the job without first tearing open the roof and assessing the extent of the damage. Again, they did not go up and investigate the damage when they came to do the quote. Given the current price of wood, we were not prepared to take that gamble.
As soon as I accepted Daryl's offer, he told me the exact date and time when the workers would arrive and they arrived like clockwork. They spent some time to explain to me exactly what they were about to do while they set up their safety equipment. They completed the job on time, for exactly the price we had agreed upon, and they left my property cleaner than they found it.
I hope nothing else breaks or is in need of renovation on my property for a very long time, but if it does, I would not hesitate to call Northern Restoration again.
Hi Dave, on behalf of Northern Restoration, we would like to thank you for your awesome review. It was a pleasure working with you.
Thanks again Dave
Daryl and his team exceeded my expectations on my steel roof and custom interior stone fireplace. Professional experience from start to finish. Will use Northern Restorations for future projects. Highly recommended company.
