We shopped around and we’re becoming exasperated when someone told us about Marlon. We set up a meeting and fell immediately that we had found the right contractor. He understood what we wanted to accomplish and was quite good at giving us some practical ways of cutting cost and coming iup with something that would maximize the use of our basement. Apart from a few hiccups here and there that saw the completion date being missed by a few days; we stayed in budget and ended up with a basement that we are happy with. Marlon also did our basement stairs and main floor stairs and those were especially very well done with solid oak wood; new posts and iron pickets. The stairs were so well done that it’s impossible to tell that they were retrofitted in oak.
I have no problem recommending Renocreate for basement finishing. Framing, plumbing & electrical done by professionals and ESA inspection was done & certificate rec'd. We did have issues with the quality of work done by one employee who did drywalling, flooring and door hanging. Marlon was quick to correct the mistakes in drywall, doors and made corrections on the floor we can live with. Marlon really wants his customer happy. I would suggest that a little more organization in arranging supplies for workers and cleaning work site during construction would make this company really good. We are very happy with finished basement.
I Strongly Recommend Marlon and the crew at Renocreate for any projects you have around the house. I got a referral from one of his past client and decided to get an estimate. My call was answered directly by the owner who who took the time right there to give me a brief idea of what they did. I was not put on hold or sent to voice mail or worst not answered. He proceeded to call me later that day and gave me a full run down of what to expect, before and after he assessed the job. Later we agreed on a price and a 2 week timeline. He came, he measured off my new laundry area, put up the walls, refaced the floors and even added new shelves (not in the quote) from old ones I had left over from my kitchen remodel without asking for extra. My husband and I were gone during the day so we missed the noise of hammering and sawing, but we were still able to access the basement daily and not worry about stepping on nails and bits and pieces of construction. My experience was A1 and I have referred Renocreate with confidence
Thx Sobrena and Fam
Renocreate Inc was engaged in October 2011 to finish our basement. Marlon Bute, the principal of the company proposed to complete the work in 4 weeks and we agreed a price. I work abroad (Lagos, Nigeria) and because I did not want work to stall while away, I paid the company over 70% of the cost - big mistake. We agreed he would start during late October or the first week of November, 2011 to allow the funds to clear and to organize to commence work. Furthermore, my wife cancelled her work appointment for the whole of November to accommodate the proposed schedule. We observed challenges with Marlon from the first day 1. He promised to resume at 9am but did not do so until afternoon. He was never prompt on site. By the time 4 weeks elapsed, not much progress had been recorded. Of course my wife could not continue to sacrifice her job so she had to agree amicable times with Marlon. He never kept his own side of the bargain and always found excuses to blame others admitting no wrong. On one occasion he couldn't work because it was his birthday. I can understand work being delayed by a week or two but how can a basement work remain unfinished in 1 year!
By December 2011, I sought to know why work was progressing so slowly and he complained that he was not getting enough support from my wife. My wife complained that they worked only a few hours a day and are regularly absent for long periods between work. It was always emotional trauma getting Marlon back to work. I expressed my dissatisfaction to Marlon and he said he could finish the remaining work in 2 weeks if someone was home all the time. So I asked him to choose a 2-week period and I would be personally available. We agreed a time in January 2012.
We met in January 2012 as planned but Marlon shocked me. He said he could not continue work because he had spent our money on another client's job and we had to wait until he was paid. He gave me an option - I could give him money for additional materials and he would continue. As ludicrous as that sounded, I had to yield and went to Lowes together to buy the items. This brought total money advanced to Marlon Bute's company to over 85% of the agreed price. You would think that Marlon would reciprocate the kind gesture? He did not show up for the rest of the two week period that I sacrificed to stay at home from work so he could complete the job. He apologised citing family problems.
My wife and I made many more genuine efforts to encourage Marlon and his Renocreate Inc to finish the work bending over backwards so we could put the painful experience behind us. While Marlon would fail to honour time schedules reached with my wife, I made at least two more trips from Lagos to Toronto to accommodate his usual 2-week requests, but it would appear we were subjects of a pure act of wickedness. Marlon just took undue advantage. Sometimes his work phones would be out of service for an extended period of time and he would become unreachable. Finally by May 2012, I informed Marlon that I would contact my lawyer if things continued that way. He pleaded with me to let us try one more time still citing that he needed just two weeks to finish the job. Since I was determined to have the job finished, I obliged and planned fro 3 weeks. I warned that I would be proceeding with my family for holiday for the entire summer. During that period Marlon sent one guy that he found off the Internet who came and worked for half a day the first day and came the next day to pick his tools.
Renocreate did not demonstrate professionalism, lacked a cohesive workforce and operated more like a middleman subcontracting work. The company was not punctual on our contract and has not delivered the agreed work in a year. At this time Marlon, the principal is proposing an unacceptable amount as refund and payable in installments. We are yet to agree and I would definitely be fair to update this review once we found an amicable solution.
Dare and wife, never intended for the basement to be completed by Renocreate Inc. Their intention was to delay the completion of the basement through deliberate tactics. The only reason why Renocreate opted to do their basement is because a customer referred us to Dare. Renocreate at no time requested 70 % deposit. Renocreate requested 30% deposit. We became immediately suspicious when Dare called us the day after we had seen him at his residence and informed us that he was leaving for Nigeria and that he had a check ready for us which was three times the amount we had requested.
We started the work sometime after. Dare was in Nigeria. We were denied access on many occasions by Dare's wife. We were also asked to start at contrary hours in the afternoon or mid morning to accommodate her social calendar. There were times that we were only allowed to work on weekends. So that we were deliberately frustrated from day one. Meanwhile, we persisted with work on the basement at their convenience, but it was a veritable nightmare. In the end, we completed the framing, electrical and plumbing rough in and had started the drywall on a near 1000 sq. Ft basement. I communicated to Dare from day one, via phone and email that we were not happy with the encumbrances. Through out, we considered their actions deliberate but were clueless as to Dare's game plan. It was finally revealed: Dare requested a refund of all monies paid for work done, failing to do which he would complain to the BBB and HandyCanadian. We were worried. Because, we didn't want our business to be hurt as often happens when a customer, rightly or wrongly, posts a negative review. At a point, we offered to pay him 30 % of that which was initially paid. We did it because we wanted to save our reputation. We didn't do it because we though we owed him any monies.
Dare was asked to get an independent evaluator to assess the work done. He emailed us saying that an evaluator valued the work, inclusive of labour and material at 2500 dollars. Every contractor knows, and so does every reasonable homeowner, that it is impossible to do framing, electrical and plumbing for 2500 inclusive of material and labour. Especially when the basement is a large one. Renocreate requested a copy of the evaluation but it was not forthcoming. Renocreated requested the name of the independent evaluator but it was not forthcoming.
