Hi guys! sorry to bug you. I have a question for you. My boyfriend is an electrician that has recently lost his job due to lack of experience. He is a hard worker and loves his job, but was cut short due to the fact that he lacked experience for his level. How can he get the experience so that he can have it for the next job that he applies for. I am in a different line of work so I am not sure how it works with electricians...Can he volunteer his time to get this experience or do you have any sugestions on how he can get it. He wants to learn, but no one is offering their time to teach him. Any advice would be great! Thank you :)

hi olivia

the only way to get more experience is to see if we can get into the union.unforchenetly small companies may not have the time to teach him.his best bet is to apply to union electrical companies that will teach him,and work tward an electrical licence.l hope this helps.also look into electrical coarces to gain more experience

If your boyfriend is interested in volunteering, I would suggest looking at Habitat for Humanity. Also the public school board has a number of Skills Development competitions...perhaps he could volunteer at a local high school to coach one of their teams and get some experience himself.

I would be wary of "volunteering" for an electrical contractor per se...we have taken coop students before and it has worked out great, but if he were to do that, you must ensure that expectations are clear. There are a lot of related issues with respect to liability, workmen's compensation etc, so this could be a risky venture for both people.

Just some thoughts for you.
